The fifth generation of the Honda Civic was presented in the fall of 1991 and was produced until the beginning of 1996. The rear of the three-door was presented with a horizontally split tailgate (the so-called alligator tailgate). In terms of safety, the fifth generation was equipped with ABS and a Euro airbag.

The engine range for the three-door model includes an engine range from 1.3-liter carburettor engines with 75 hp to 1.6-liter engines with two overhead camshafts and VTEC technology with 160 hp, while the sedan covers a performance range from 90 to 160 hp . With this generation, two new VTEC engines are introduced, a SOHC-VTEC and a VTEC-E engine.

As a contribution to the roadster wave of CRX came in the spring of 1992 as a two-seater with removable roof, with one to 7600 min -1 strong rotating 160 horsepower VTEC engine is equipped.

In January 1994 the Civic series was expanded with a five-door model.

Honda CRX (1992-1998)

Main article: Honda CRX
From March 1992, Honda offered the sporty consumer group the Honda CRX del Sol (in the USA until 1995 also called "Civic del Sol", in Europe Civic CRX until 1994). It was based on a shortened platform of the Civic Hatchback. Two performance levels were offered, which were achieved with different engines in the various markets. In North America there was traditionally a third entry level. Since the days of the S800 , Honda has offered a convertible again, which was not seen by purists as the third generation of the sports coupé. The engines were again combined with a manual 5-speed or an automatic 4-speed gearbox. The roof could be removed manually or electrically.
