The Honda Accord is a mid-size car from the Japanese car manufacturer Honda . The first generation appeared on the German market in mid-1976 and was sold until autumn 1981.
The Accord was Honda's second attempt (after the 1300 of 1969) to gain a foothold in the middle class. And although the coupé- like "hatchback" variant of the Accord, which is similar to the VW Scirocco I , did not necessarily meet the taste of conservative interested parties, the attempt was overwhelmingly successful, at least in Europe and North America.

To ensure the success of the Accord, from the end of 1977 Honda added a four-door notchback sedan to this new mid-range model series. With the same wheelbase as its sister model, the hatchback, it was 22 cm longer so that a large trunk could be offered.
The Accord was originally equipped with a 1.6 liter engine. In Japan and the USA, because of the restrictive emissions legislation there, these were exclusively CVCC engines, while in the rest of the world this technology was not used. From 1978 Honda increased the displacement in Japan and from 1979 also in North America to 1.8 l. From the beginning of 1979, slightly enlarged 1.6-liter engines were also used outside of Japan.
Right from the start, the Accord could optionally be equipped with a manual 5-speed gearbox or a two-stage Hondamatic (Honda's own automatic gearbox). In the course of the engine revision in 1979, the Hondamatic received a third stage.
