The Honda Insight is a hybrid car from Honda . It was one of the first of its kind in 1999 and the first generation, which was built as a small car, was very economical with a consumption of 3.4 l Super per 100 km.

In 2009 the second generation came on the market, which was now built in compact car size. Consumption rose accordingly, but it was still very low in its class.

The third generation presented in 2018 is again powered by a hybrid drive.

The first Insight is a two-seat hatchback sedan. It was the first mass-produced hybrid car to be sold in the US (in Japan, however, the first generation Toyota Prius was introduced as early as 1997). With a DIN consumption of 3.4 l per 100 km and CO 2 emissions of only 80 g / km, it was the first standard 3-liter car with a gasoline engine.

Of the approx. 12,000 units produced up to 2006, approx. 100 vehicles were delivered to German dealers for presentation purposes in 2000. Honda did not officially offer this low-energy vehicle on the German market.

The Insight has a 3-cylinder gasoline engine and a brushless electric motor on the crankshaft . A battery pack made of NiMH batteries with a nominal voltage of 144 V is located behind the driver and front passenger seats . The electric motor provides additional power when accelerating and driving uphill; When braking or driving downhill, the electric motor acts as a generator and charges the accumulators in a type of recuperation . Even when the battery level is low, the combustion engine also charges the batteries via the electric motor, a kind of range extender. A computer controls which power is delivered by the internal combustion engine and which by the electric motor; the CVT variant also has the optimal gear ratio .

The charge status of the batteries is displayed on the dashboard, as is the status of the electric motor: whether it supports the combustion engine or uses a generator to charge the batteries. The manual 5-speed gearbox has an extremely long ratio, so that the top speed is just reached in 3rd gear, but not in 5th. In any case, the engine control regulates the spray supply from 185 km / h. Theoretically, a top speed of well over 220 km / h is possible with a sufficient gradient, as the all-aluminum body achieves a peak value of 0.25. After the Honda NSX in 1990, the Insight was the second all-aluminum Honda to be constructed and closely related to the Audi Space Frame .

Minor models

Civic IMA (2003-2005)

The first generation of hybrid technology from Honda is built into the Insight. The next generation, which requires less space, will be used in the Civic IMA in 2003.

Civic Hybrid (2006-2010)

In 2006, the Civic Hybrid will reduce the size of the battery pack by around 13 percent. The Verkehrsclub Deutschland named it the most environmentally friendly vehicle in both 2006/2007 and 2007/2008.

From April 2009 a new mild hybrid car was delivered under the name Insight.

The five-door hatchback sedan was the lowest-priced hybrid car on the German market until the Toyota Yaris Hybrid was launched. The Insight is powered by a 1.3-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 65 kW (88 PS) and an electric motor with 10 kW (14 PS), resulting in a total torque of 167 Nm and a system output of 72 kW (98 PS) leads. There are a total of three equipment variants of the Insight on the German market. According to the manufacturer, the consumption is 4.4 l or 4.6 l per 100 km (combined), depending on the variant, and the CO 2 emissions are 101 or 105 g / km.

In the year of its publication, the Insight was named the most environmentally friendly vehicle in the compact class by the Verkehrsclub Deutschland , just like the Civic IMA or Civic Hybrid had been in the five years before .

A revised model, which can be recognized by a modified radiator grille, was presented at the IAA 2011. The slimmed down rear spoiler is supposed to improve the view to the rear and there is now a chrome strip between the rear lights. In addition to the interior, the engine has also been revised, which has reduced consumption and the CO 2 emissions have since been given as 96 g / km. Sales started in February 2012.

Despite the significantly lower price compared to its main competitor Toyota Prius , the Insight sold significantly worse from the start. Due to insufficient sales, the Insight was discontinued in Germany in November 2013.

At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2018 , Honda presented the Insight Prototype, a first glimpse of a new Insight generation. The production version was presented at the New York International Auto Show in March 2018 and has been on sale in North America since summer 2018. For the first time, the Insight is being built as a notchback sedan. The sedan is also powered by a hybrid drive. The vehicle has also been available on the Japanese market since December 2018.
