It was originally only intended for Japan and the US market, and belongs to the third generation of the Integra models. In January 1998 the Integra was introduced in Germany exclusively in the sport version "Type R". It was powered by a 1.8 liter naturally aspirated engine with the VTEC valve control developed by Honda and a peak output of 140 kW (190 PS) ( power to weight ratio 6.32 kg / PS, output per liter 106 PS) and 178 Nm torque at 7300 rpm −1 . The power is sent to the front wheels via a 5-speed gearbox and a 25 percent Torsen limited - slip differential . As a result, the relatively light sports coupé with an unladen weight of 1200 kg accelerates to 100 km / h in 6.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 234 km / h. The average consumption was given as around 8.8 l per 100 km.

In contrast to the Integra versions not available in Germany, the Type R had an aerodynamic package consisting of a front and rear spoiler, which reduced lift by around 30%. In addition to a more sporty chassis set-up with progressive springs on the rear axle and thicker stabilizers on the front and rear axles, it also had special rubber bushings in the lower front wishbones, which helped the front wheels to more toe-out in these driving conditions to stabilize the braking and steering behavior. Furthermore, the body has been reinforced with additional sheets at various points that are critical for rigidity, such as the wheel arches, the rear wheel arches and on the roof between the C-pillars. The increased mass was counteracted by weight reduction measures. The support width of the rear wheel bearings has been increased in order to give the rear axle more stability against unwanted camber changes.

Although the Japanese model of the Integra was offered with larger 16 "aluminum rims and 215/45 ZR16 tires from the 98spec model onwards, the new 5x114.3 bolt circle and the associated larger brake system were adopted for the European model, but the original rims - and tire size (15 ", 195/55 R15) retained. Likewise, the 4-1 stainless steel manifold installed in the 98spec in Japan was not taken over into the model for the European market, but the gear ratio with the longer 4th and 5th gear as well as the shorter axle ratio was. This exhaust manifold helped the Japanese model to another torque curve with the maximum at a lower speed (186 Nm at 6200 min -1 instead of 178 Nm at 7300 min -1 ) to match the now lower engine speed after shifting from 3rd to 4 . Gear.

The base price was last DM 47,580  ; January 2001 the last copies were sold in Germany. Production ended in October 2001. The next generation of Integra, marketed in Japan, Australia, Hong Kong and North America (in the USA, Canada and Hong Kong as the Acura RSX ), was no longer offered in Central Europe.

Model variants abroad

In addition to the predecessor and successor models not available in Germany, there were also third-generation Integra models with different engines and equipment. In North America there were the versions LS and GS with engine outputs of 140 hp, as well as the sportier version GS-R with 170 hp. In these versions, the Integra was also available as a 4-door sedan, whereas a 4-door Type-R was only available on the Japanese market (model designation DB8). In North America, the Integra was sold under the brand name 'Acura'.

Japanese Type R model

A 98spec Integra Type R

In Japan, the Integra Type R was offered in several versions, with the model year "98spec" introducing the largest technical changes compared to the "96spec" that was initially published. In later model maintenance measures, the changes were more of a cosmetic nature. The two mentioned model versions differ from each other through various moderate technical changes (e.g. 16 "rims with bolt circle 5 × 114.3 for the 98spec, 15" rims with bolt circle 4 × 114.3 for the 96spec, different gear ratios, different exhaust manifolds, larger ones Intake bridge with polished inlet and outlet ports).

The biggest differences between the Japanese variants and the European model are a different front section and a different, but similar engine (B18C with 147 kW / 200 PS) with a catalytic converter that is only about half as long, a different manifold with a 65mm outlet (spec. 96/4 2-1 Same shape as EU model but 65mm instead of 40mm outlet, spec. 98 / 4-1 is a manifold made of stainless steel). The curb weight of the 98spec is given as 1080 kg.
