The Honda Civic Type R is a sports version derived from the Honda Civic , a compact class vehicle from the vehicle manufacturer Honda . There was a Type R for the first time in 1997. The R stands for racing .

EK9 (1996-2000)

The Civic Type R presented in 1997 is a model derived from the 6th generation of the Civic . It was only offered in Japan and is therefore only available as a right-hand drive . The self-supporting body ( monocoque ) of the Civics Type R is seam-welded instead of spot-welded at crucial points in order to increase torsional rigidity. The driver and passenger seats are from Recaro, the steering wheel from Momo, and the gear knob is made of titanium . The engine has a displacement of 1.6, a maximum of 136 kW (185 hp), two overhead camshafts and variable valve timing. The manual gearbox has five gears and is interlocked with the limited slip differential.

From the outside, the Type R can be recognized by the lips on the front and rear bumper and by a spoiler on the tailgate. Other distinguishing features are the modified radiator grille (unlike the other models, it has no cross struts) and the red Honda logos on the bonnet and tailgate.

Sporty accents were set in the interior with an aluminum gear knob , Recaro sports seats, a Momo steering wheel and the instruments with a Type R emblem on a white background.

The Type R received the Sport Auto of the Year award in the compact class from sport auto magazine four times .

30th anniversary edition

For the 30th anniversary of the Honda Civic in 2002, Honda launched a special edition of the EP3. The changes to the production model included different red Recaro seats, a different steering wheel, black-tinted rear and side windows and a slightly changed interior (red carpets and door panels).

Facelift

At the beginning of 2004 the Type R was revised and got a facelift . The spoilers have been redesigned, the turn signals have been removed from the fenders and built into the side mirrors, the front headlights and rear lights have also been given a new design. In addition, the rear side windows and the rear window were tinted black (optionally in conjunction with xenon headlights).

In order to further enhance the sporty look in the interior, the standard Recaro front seats were given red seat and back surfaces with matching door panels. The performance improved somewhat thanks to a lighter clutch flywheel , so that the sprint from 0 to 100 km / h only takes 6.6 s instead of 6.8 s.

The Civic Type R in motorsport

Due to the relatively favorable price-performance ratio in the compact sports car class, the Honda Civic Type R is popular with amateur drivers in racing. The Civic Type R is also widespread in the endurance cup on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife , because Honda has put its own valuation with prize money for this type.

In spring 2006, the concept vehicle of a further generation of the Civic Type R was presented at the Geneva Motor Show , based on the eighth generation of the Civic . About a year later it came on the market; in Switzerland from January 2007, in Germany from March 31, 2007.

On the outside, the Type R can be recognized by the standard 15 mm lowering, widened fenders, rear spoiler and 18-inch wheels. The revised two-liter naturally aspirated engine (code: K20Z4) with the throttle-by-wire system ( "electronic throttle"), two overhead camshafts and i-VTEC -Ventilsteuerung provides 148 kW (201 hp) at 7800 min -1 and has a max. Torque of 193 Nm at 5600 min -1 . The maximum valve opening is now already at 5,200 min -1 . The acceleration of the Type R is specified as 6.6 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h; the top speed of 235 km / h. The power is transmitted through a six-speed manual transmission.

The interior is equipped with sports bucket seats , a leather steering wheel and a shift bag made of black Alcantara with red stitching. Like the Integra Type R, the Civic Type R has a serial number label attached to the gear lever. There are three models to choose from, which differ in equipment and weight: the Type R Light Weight , the Type R Plus and a racing version produced in small numbers as the basis for pure racing use. The colors offered were silver metallic , red, black pearl and bronze pearl .

The Type-R was only marginally affected by the revision of the Civic models from January 17, 2009. The colors now available are Deep Sapphire Blue Pearl , Alabaster Silver Metallic , Deep Bronze Pearl , Crystal Black Pearl and Milano Red .

At the end of 2010, the Civic Type R was removed from the model range because it did not meet the Euro 5 emissions standard planned for 2011.

Championship White Edition

From July 2009 the Civic Type R was also available in the special equipment Championship White Edition , which differs from the standard models mainly through the paint (color Championship White ). The new design of the 18-inch alloy wheels are also painted in the color known from previous Type R models. In contrast, the door handles, the tank cap and the radiator grille are in dark chrome.

In order to further improve traction when driving in a sporty manner, this model is supplied with a Torsen limited-slip differential.

In spring 2015, the final version of the new Type R was presented at the Geneva Motor Show , after numerous near-series studies had been presented at previous trade fairs. Like its predecessors, it is based on the then current Civic generation, Generation 9 , but in this generation a considerable amount of technical and visual effort was made to differentiate the model from the basic variant. The model also combines some technical premieres for a series vehicle from Honda. Details can be found in the following sections. The model could be ordered from the auto show, deliveries started in late summer 2015.

drive

The only available drive option is a 2-liter turbo four-cylinder gasoline engine with 228 kW (310 hp) output at 6500 rpm and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. The engine is of the type K20C1 and derived from the four-cylinder engine family Honda K Motor . In addition to Honda's VTEC variable valve control , the engine has an exhaust gas turbocharger , an engine block made entirely of aluminum and an exhaust manifold that is fully integrated into the cylinder head.

The K20C1 motor is manufactured in the USA, although the current FK2 Type R cannot be ordered there. The biggest technical change besides the turbo itself is the strategy for the VTEC system. While the naturally aspirated versions achieve an increase in performance at high speeds with more valve lift, which happens with the turbo in the K20C1, Honda uses VTEC here at low speeds on the exhaust side to better flow into the turbo and thus reduce the turbo lag. This enabled the use of a technically simpler, but also more powerful monoscroll turbo at high speeds. This means that technically more vulnerable (because more complex) and more expensive bi-turbos or turbos with variable turbine geometry can be dispensed with. A classic front-mounted air-to-air intercooler is used to cool the air in the intake tract .

The torque is transmitted to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission with an integrated mechanical locking differential . The gearbox received a lot of praise in the specialist media for its positive feedback and short shifting travel, and the reduction to a manual gearbox was also seen as a beneficial change from the automatic trend, which is also growing in the sports sector. With the pure front-wheel drive , Honda clearly distances itself from its competitors, who are increasingly turning to all-wheel drive with these performance data. This applies to the Audi RS3, Mercedes A45 / CLA45 AMG, the current Ford Focus RS and also the Golf R. Only the Renault Megane RS and the Seat Leon Cupra still rely on the same concept, although production of the Megane has already ended. These two competitors also have at least 15 kW less power than the Type R.

landing gear

Honda also differentiates the Type R from the basic model with a significantly more complex chassis construction. For the first time, an adaptive damper system is installed in the Civic , which can use electromagnetic fields to regulate the damping independently on each wheel. This should be useful for general driving stability and cornering. Furthermore, the front axle is provided with a special two-point suspension, which is intended to reduce the so-called torque steer, i.e. involuntary steering during strong acceleration, by up to 60%. Opel, Ford and Renault have already used similar designs. If you use the + R mode, the damping stiffens by a flat rate of 30%. However, this setting cannot currently be selected / deselected individually. Road contact is established as standard via 19 inch rims with 235/35 R19 tires. Furthermore, 18 inch rims with 225/40 R18 tires can be used, e.g. B. for winter tires. The SportContact 6 rubber profile from the manufacturer Continental is used ex works. This type of tire had its premiere together with the Type R and is said to have been used for the record run on the Nordschleife. Honda claims to have tuned the vehicle closely together with this tire.

Exterior

The exterior of the Type R is determined by the complex aerodynamic add-ons and the massive Brembo brake system with 4-piston fixed calipers and 350 mm discs on the front axle compared to the base. In addition, the Type R has a four-pipe exhaust system, which ends integrated in the rear diffuser . The other models of the ninth Civic generation no longer have any visible exhaust covers. Otherwise, the Type R takes over the 2015 facelift of the other model variants, including the new LED headlights, daytime running lights integrated in the main headlights and new LED rear lights. These are also darkened on the Type R to underline the sporty character. The massive rear spoiler is an integral part of the vehicle's aerodynamic stability. Honda offers in-house accessories in the form of a complete carbon spoiler, and typical Honda tuners like Mugen are also working on their own aerodynamic parts. Another distinctive feature of the Type R is the Formula 1-style rear fog light in the rear diffuser. In order to guarantee good braking performance at all times, channels from the front grille have also been installed in the wheel arches to additionally cool the front brake system. The chassis rigidity was further increased by a special adhesive process on certain body parts.

inner space

The Type R essentially uses the interior concept of the normal Civic including the cockpit on two levels. The differences are that the Type R only has 4 seats, and the rear seat can only be folded down, but not set up. Honda justifies the first with the permissible payload of the vehicle (247 kg) and the second with the saving of weight.

The dashboard has red accents and parts in a carbon look. The round instruments have a metallic sheen and a white background lighting, which changes to red in the + R mode. The eco display of the normal models on the digital speedometer under the windshield has been replaced by a gradual display for the rev limiter. If the red dots meet in the middle of the display, the latest time to upshift before the limiter is reached.

The on-board computer implemented in the i-MID display has been specially expanded for the Type R. In addition to the normal modes such as fuel consumption, odometer, range, clock and music playback, there is a timer for laps and 0-100 km / h attempts. There are also displays for the turbo boost pressure, oil and water temperature and oil pressure. This was received very positively by the specialist media and customers, as it enables the vehicle to be properly warm and cold and thus to minimize wear and tear and increase durability even with high performance requirements.

The Type R also receives the Honda CONNECT as standard. This touchscreen media system can be used to couple smartphones via Mirrorlink, digital radio and USB music playback are possible and an HDMI input is also available. Hands-free calling is possible via a Bluetooth coupling. The GT equipment also includes a Garmin-based navigation application and a 320 watt sound system.

Security and assistance systems

In the basic version, already extensively equipped with airbags all around, a city emergency brake assistant, tire pressure loss warning, electronic brake force distribution with ABS, stability system and modern LED lighting technology, the GT version has additional safety systems. These include a blind spot assistant, traffic sign recognition, high beam assistant, collision warning, light and rain sensor and a lane departure warning.

The driver receives further assistance from parking sensors, a reversing camera, hill start assist and cruise control.

The Civic is rated with the maximum rating of five stars in the Euro-NCAP crash test, and the ADAC also gave the vehicle a very good rating in its extended crash test with partial overlap and crash compatibility with other vehicles. In the latter test, the vehicle was able to clearly distance itself from competitors such as the VW Golf.

Comfort

In addition to the Alcantara-covered sports seats with exceptionally high side bolsters, there is a 2-zone automatic air conditioning, a Type R-exclusive aluminum gear knob, red contrasting stitching on upholstery and door panels, red ambient lighting, aluminum sports pedals, fully electric exterior mirrors and a few other small amenities.
