The Honda City is a small car from the Japanese vehicle manufacturer Honda . The car was originally launched on the Japanese market in 1981, but is now available in various countries. In Japan, the current version is now called the Honda Fit Aria and is supplemented by the Honda Fit .

Honda City Cabriolet

The Honda City was first produced in 1981 as a three-door hatchback model and was then only available on the Japanese market. A convertible and two turbo versions of the City followed in the first generation. Only the normal hatchback version was offered in Europe as the Honda Jazz from 1984 to 1986 .

At the Tokyo Motor Show 1981 , the city was presented as a space saver, as you could put a mini motorcycle ( Motocompo ) in the trunk. As a result, he was called "Tall Boy" among its creators. Due to the economical consumption and the large space available, the Honda City very quickly became a great success and enjoyed great popularity among the Japanese population.

Technically, the engines were very advanced at the time. In the turbo version, a 1.2-liter engine with a turbocharger was used, which brought it to 100 hp using PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection; in German: sequential electronic fuel injection). An additional charge air cooling made it to 110 hp for the Turbo II.

The 2nd generation Honda City has been equipped with a new engine and optically changed in many respects. The front section was adapted to the then striking Honda face (see also Honda Civic G3 & G4), and the vehicle was also reduced in height.

Turbo and convertible versions were not used in this series, but the City was equipped with a larger and more powerful engine in 1989 and this version was built until 1990.

A third generation of the Honda City was initially not to appear until a new Honda model came onto the market in Thailand in 1996 . This 4-door sedan, derived from the Honda Civic , was built according to the motto “ inexpensive without being cheap” . The name City was chosen because the typical urban family in this region was chosen as the target group. Since this model was very successful in the Asia-Pacific region, new variants with different engines were offered as early as 1997 .

The fourth generation of the Honda City is characterized by numerous changes compared to the previous model. Overall, the vehicle was given a softer line and additional visual changes were made to the front and rear. In addition to the usual engine, the Honda City was first available as a VTEC in 1999 .

In November 2002, a fifth generation of the Honda City was presented, which was only sold as the Honda City outside of Japan, Asia and Eastern Europe . In Japan this new Honda was offered as the Honda Fit Aria .

At the beginning of 2011 a cheap version appeared in China as Everus S1 . This is the first model of a brand specially designed for the Chinese market by a non-Chinese manufacturer. Like its predecessor, the car is built by Guangqi Honda Automobile .

In September 2008, the sixth generation of the Honda City was presented in Thailand. The four-door notchback sedan with a 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine has been completely redeveloped. At least in Thailand, the vehicle can also be ordered with a natural gas drive.

Rear view

In 2013, the seventh generation of the City built by Guangqi Honda Automobile came onto the market. It is powered by a 1.5-liter R4 petrol engine with an output of 96 kW (131 hp). The vehicle is supplied with a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard ; a continuously variable gearbox is available as an option.

In September 2015, Honda's other joint venture, Dongfeng Honda Automobile, presented the Greiz , which is based on the City, but looks more sporty. It came onto the Chinese market in 2016.

The Honda City is also available in Thailand. The 1.5-liter engine in the version for Thailand has an output of 117 hp and can optionally also be operated with an E85 . The basic version is equipped with a manual 5-speed gearbox as standard; a CVT transmission is optionally available. High-quality equipment lines are only available with CVT transmissions.

The seventh generation is available in Japan as the Honda Grace . In addition to the globally sold 1.5-liter gasoline engine, a variant with a hybrid drive is also available there.
