The Honda S-MX (Japanese: ホ ン ダ · S-MX) is a minivan that Honda produced between 1996 and 2002. It looks similar to the larger Honda StepWGN , but is shorter in length and height. While the StepWGN offered three rows of seats and up to eight passengers, the smaller S-MX only had two rows of seats for four or five passengers. To maximize space for passengers, the S-MX used a steering wheel shift for the only available 4-speed automatic transmission . The S-MX was powered by a 2.0 liter version of Honda's B-series engine with two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. The power was 130 PS (96 kW) at 5500 tours. This engine was also used in the Honda CR-Vinstalled. Similar to the CR-V, the S-MX was available with front-wheel drive or optionally all-wheel drive . As usual with Japanese minivans of the time, the S-MX only offered a (conventional) rear door on the passenger side of the vehicle. Allegedly, this function was for the safety of the passengers to prevent rash stepping out of the traffic.
Production of the S-MX ended in 2002 and the model was only replaced by the Honda FR-V in 2004.
