The first Honda Jazz was introduced in Europe in the fall of 1983. On the international market this car was sold as the Honda City . In Europe, this was not possible following a lawsuit brought by the vehicle manufacturer Opel , who saw a trademark infringement due to the Kadett City designation used by Opel in the 1970s .

Outside Europe, especially in Japan, where the introduction took place in 1981, there was also a convertible and a five-door version of the car. In Japan, the car was available with a 1.2-liter engine with 46 kW (63 hp) and as the City R with 49 kW (67 hp) and as a City Turbo with 73 kW (99 hp). In Europe, the first generation Honda Jazz was only offered as a two-door model. The small car was equipped with a 1.2-liter engine with 33 kW (45 hp), or optionally with a 1.2-liter engine with 41 kW (56 hp).

The model was discontinued at the end of 1986 and only replaced by the Honda logo ten years later .

In the fall of 2001, a new Honda small car was introduced in Japan as the Honda Fit . The vehicle bore the same name in China and America.

In Europe, however, he appeared in the spring of 2002 as Honda Jazz. The car was offered there as a five-door hatchback sedan . In Germany, the car was available with a 1.2-liter engine with 57 kW (78 hp) and a 1.3-liter engine with 61 kW (83 hp), which was, however, designated as "1.4". Both engines work on the principle of sequential double ignition (i-DSI; Dual & Sequential Ignition). This means that each cylinder is equipped with two spark plugs that fire one after the other.

Honda's own ESP under the name VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) was available for models with a 1.3 liter engine .

A facelift took place in autumn 2005 , during which, among other things, the exterior mirrors on the LS, ES and Sport versions were equipped with indicators.

The second generation of the Honda Jazz came onto the market in Germany on November 22nd, 2008. In Japan this was already offered under the name Honda Fit since October 2007. The models of the second generation of the Honda Jazz are at 3.90 meters 55 millimeters longer and at 1.70 meters two centimeters wider than the first generation. The height remained unchanged at 1.53 meters. Visually, the Jazz has only been slightly revised, but the model should offer significantly more power than the previous generation with less consumption.

The vehicle was initially offered with two engine variants: a 1.2-liter petrol engine with 90 hp and a 1.3-liter petrol engine with 100 hp. Up until the 2011 facelift, the automated manual transmission called "I-Shift" could be installed in the 1.3-liter petrol engine. All models have a gear change indicator as standard. The 1.3-liter gasoline engine (1339 cm³ displacement) was only correctly designated as "1.3" in the hybrid model, whereas it was declared as "1.4" in the normal model.

Facelift 2011

On April 16, 2011, a revised version of Jazz was released. This facelift only includes small changes to the bumpers, headlights, taillights and the chassis. Since then, the hybrid model Jazz Hybrid IMA ( Integrated Motor Assist ), which combines a 1.3-liter petrol engine with 88 hp with a 10.3 kW electric motor, has also been offered. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) is standard equipment on the 1.3-liter hybrid . This is offered as an option in the 1.4 l version. The trunk of the hybrid model is smaller than that of the gasoline engine from 379 liters to 303 liters, as the battery and the power electronics are housed in the compartment under the trunk floor. As a result, the hybrid model has gained 70 kg to 1234 kg. The electric motor enables the hybrid model to drive purely electrically over a short distance. A sufficiently full battery and a steady speed in the range between 35 and 50 km / h are required for this. However, the electric motor mainly serves to support the gasoline engine. Like the Insight , from which the drive system was adopted, the Jazz Hybrid is a parallel hybrid that was implemented as a mild hybrid .

The third generation of jazz appeared in Germany at the end of September 2015. The model has been available in Japan as Honda Fit since September 2013. Compared to the previous model, the Jazz is 9.5 cm longer and the wheelbase has grown to 2.53 m. A City Emergency Brake Assistant (CTBA) and cruise control are also standard equipment. The concept of variability of the rear seat bench called by Honda Magic Seats , which was a unique selling point in the small car class in previous generations, was retained. The Honda Connect infotainment system with 7-inch touchscreen, traffic sign recognition and lane departure warning system are also available in higher equipment variants . Again there is a CVT automatic transmission at an additional cost. The third generation Jazz shares the platform with the second generation Honda HR-V .

At the start of the German market, the engine was a 1.3-liter VTEC gasoline engine with 75 kW (102 hp). A 6-speed manual transmission and a CVT transmission are available as transmissions . Power is transmitted to the road by means of front-wheel drive. For the time being, a hybrid drive is not available for the European market; a 1.5-liter hybrid engine is available in Asia. The starting price in Germany for third-generation jazz was € 15,900 when sales began.

At the 67th IAA in September 2017 in Frankfurt am Main , Honda presented a revised version of Jazz. In addition to a new front design, a new equipment line and a new color palette, the facelift also includes the introduction of another 96 kW (130 PS) 1.5-liter petrol engine. The first revised models have been delivered since January 20, 2018.

In spring 2017, the Honda WR-V came onto the market in emerging countries such as Brazil and India, a mini SUV based on the Fit.

The fourth generation of the series debuted in October 2019 at the Tokyo Motor Show as the Honda Fit . In February 2020, the Fit first went on sale in Japan. In Europe, the vehicle will continue to be marketed as the Honda Jazz and exclusively as a hybrid. In Germany, the e: HEV came to retailers in June 2020 at prices starting at 22,000 euros. The series will be sold on the Chinese market as Fit with a slightly different appearance from July 2020.

While two drive variants are available in Japan with a gasoline engine with 72 kW (98 hp) and a gasoline hybrid with 80 kW (109 hp), only the hybrid is offered in Europe. As in the SUV CR-V , the internal combustion engine in the hybrid version usually acts as a generator that supplies energy for the electric motor. This then drives the wheels. The working energy of the internal combustion engine can also be sent directly to the wheels; this usually happens at high speeds. Usually in urban use, the electric motor receives energy from the lithium-ion accumulator so that the combustion engine is not required.

The “Crosstar” version in a modern crossover look is also available worldwide for an additional charge. The larger dimensions are exclusively due to the additional applications.

As before, the tank is located below the front seats, which means that the system of folding rear seats known by Honda as Magic Seats has been retained. The trunk volume is given by Honda with 298 to 1,203 liters.

Like the Honda e electric car , the Jazz has software that works as an intelligent personal assistant . It is called "Honda Personal Assistant" by the manufacturer. Various connectivity services and applications can be controlled via voice control, which is activated with the command "OK Honda".

Trivia

The Honda Jazz was initially to bear the international name Fitta, but this was withdrawn because "Fitta" is a vulgar term for vagina in Scandinavian languages .
