The first generation of the Honda CR-V was presented in late 1995. The 4.50 meter long vehicle was offered with two different four-cylinder petrol engines with 94 kW or 108 kW. A special feature of this model was the tailgate that opened to the right and had a spare wheel holder. In 1999 the CR-V underwent a facelift , in which mainly the front bumper was changed.
At the beginning of the model series (1996–1997) the CR-V was only offered with an automatic transmission. In the years that followed, until the end of production, both an automatic transmission and a manual five-speed transmission were offered. The CR-V is powered by Real Time 4WD , an all-wheel drive that automatically drives the rear wheels if necessary.
A camping table is integrated in the trunk, which also serves as the base plate for the trunk.
The CR-V was built in Sayama (model code RD1) and Swindon (model code RD3) at Honda of the UK Manufacturing .

The second generation CR-V (model code RD) presented in autumn 2001 is offered as a gasoline engine (2.0 l i- VTEC ) and from model year 2005 as a diesel variant (2.2 l i-CTDi ). With the rear seat folded down, it has a capacity of up to 952 liters.
Honda offers three different equipment variants: from the LS version with steel rims and fabric interior, to the ES version with aluminum rims and ESP , to the executive version with leather interior.
The CR-V has Real Time 4WD , an all-wheel drive that engages automatically when there is little traction . Up to six airbags as well as the electronic systems ( ABS , electronic brake force distribution and the Honda VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) called ESP) contribute to safety in the CR-V .
In autumn 2004 a slight facelift followed. On the engine side, a 2.2 liter diesel with 103 kW (140 hp) was added to the range.
The lack of gear reduction, the engine and gearbox concept designed for the road and the self-supporting body with independent suspension make the CR-V not what is commonly defined as an off-road vehicle , which was designed for off-road use. The built-in all-wheel drive system serves more to drive safety in certain traffic situations than to make it easier to move forward in rough terrain. The direct competitors of the CR-V are the Kia Sportage , Hyundai Tucson and the Toyota RAV4 .
Honda could only sell 4,105 CR-Vs in Germany in 2004 . The RAV4, on the other hand, had over 18,000 registrations in the same year. With the model upgrade introduced at the beginning of 2005 and a diesel engine, Honda was able to gain market share.

The third CR-V (model code RE5) was presented in autumn 2006 and has the same wheelbase as its predecessor. It has Real Time 4WD , an all-wheel drive that automatically engages when there is little traction on the front axle .
The dimensions, especially the length and height, have been reduced and are based more on the first model. The two engines are also offered with 110 kW in gasoline and 103 kW in diesel.
In autumn 2009, the CR-V received a slight facelift on the front and rear, which went on sale in early 2010. Since then, a diesel engine with an optimized output and consumption with 110 kW has been used, which now also complies with the Euro 5 emissions standard .

The fourth generation (model code RE6) of the CR-V was introduced across Europe on November 3, 2012. Initially, a gasoline engine with a displacement of two liters and 114 kW (155 hp) and a 2.2-liter diesel with an output of 110 kW (150 hp) were offered.
The CR-V has been available since September 2013 with the 1.6 i-DTEC engine with 120 hp, which has been available in the Civic since spring .
A revised version was presented at the beginning of 2015. In addition to slight visual changes, the 2.2-liter diesel was replaced by a variant of the 1.6 i-DTEC with bi-turbo charging. The output was increased to 118 kW (160 hp).

The fifth generation of the CR-V was presented in Detroit in October 2016 . The vehicle was first sold in the United States on December 21, 2016 . The variant for Europe was presented at the 88th Geneva Motor Show in March 2018 and went on sale on October 20, 2018. Due to revisions to the chassis, the brakes and the dampers, according to the manufacturer, the market launch in Europe will take place so late.
The platform is shared by the new CR-V with the tenth-generation Civic . For the first time since the first generation, the CR-V is no longer sold with a diesel engine. The new CR-V is optionally available with seven seats.
At Auto Shanghai in April 2017, Honda showed the CR-V Hybrid. This has been sold in China since the end of 2017 . In addition, a purely electric version is planned for the Chinese market from 2018. The hybrid version has also been on sale in Europe since February 16, 2019. As a rule, the internal combustion engine in the hybrid version acts as a generator that supplies energy for the electric motor. This then drives the wheels. The working energy of the combustion engine can also be sent directly to the wheels; this usually takes place in the speed range between 80 and 100 km / h. Usually in urban use, the electric motor receives energy from the lithium-ion accumulator so that the combustion engine is not required.
In November 2019, the almost identical Honda Breeze came onto the market in China . This differs only slightly from the CR-V. Since Honda has two joint ventures on the Chinese market , the Breeze built by Guangqi Honda Automobile is offered in addition to the CR-V produced by Dongfeng Honda Automobile .
