Honda 1300 DDAC engine

In 1968 Sōichirō Honda presented a mid-range sedan with an air-cooled, transversely installed 4-cylinder engine. The first presentation took place on October 21, 1968, a few days before the Tokyo Motor Show, in a hotel, the public at the Tokyo Motor Show . Honda placed the 1300/145 model series in the lower middle class. Despite alloy and front engine he wanted to prove that the air cooling of the water cooling is superior without sacrificing comfort, because it requires fewer parts and less weight. The Honda 1300 was undoubtedly a high point in the technical development of series automobiles with air-cooled engines. 203 patents have been registered for this model.

Despite silent motor - thanks DDAC ( D uo D yna A ir C ooling) - and good performance of the model of economic success was denied. Therefore, production ran out after 106,491 units (sedan and coupé) had been built. The successor named 145 still had the body of the 1300 , but a water-cooled engine.

In 1969 the 1300 van prototype was presented, a station wagon that did not go into production. The successor model of the series was the Honda Accord, offered from 1976 .

Model and engine overview

1300 sedan / coupé (1969–1972)

The sedan was sold in Japan from May 1969, the coupé from March 1970. The car was available in 1969 in four configurations (Standard / Deluxe / Custom / S) and two power levels (100 PS / 115 PS). It was built in two variants and with different performance levels until 1972. The main external distinguishing feature of the two variants are the headlights. The first variant had rectangular headlights, the later round headlights. The vehicle with automatic transmission has been around since 1970. Later in the same year the sedan was revised and the more powerful variant discontinued.

As with the sedan, there were also two variants of the coupé , but they differed little from the outside. The main difference is the power: the 1.3 liter air-cooled engine with DDAC has one carburettor in the 7 Coupé , while four carburettors are used in the 9 Coupé . Automatic versions were also offered.

The coupe was revised as early as 1971. The successor to the Coupe 7 received the front of the likewise revised sedan in the course of the changes.

Honda 145 Coupe

145 sedan / coupé (1972–1974)

The successors of the technically interesting, but probably less successful type 1300 because of the air-cooled engine , were built under the name 145 from 1972 to 1974. The 145 appeared to the Japanese as a swan song for a bygone era, because the more modern Civic had already conquered the market. Therefore only 9,736 units (sedans and coupes) were built.

The new, liquid-cooled 1.45-l engine, which at first glance looks like a Civic engine, was built into the virtually unchanged body of the predecessor 1300 . However, like the sedan of the original version of the Model 77 , the 145 Coupé received rectangular headlights . Even the chassis was not changed.

It is worth mentioning that the FI model of the 145 Coupé was Honda's first series vehicle with mechanically controlled intake manifold injection in order to improve performance .

In 1973 - one year before production was discontinued - Honda brought the 145 Coupé onto the market with an automatic transmission. But even this measure did not stimulate sales.
