The NAIAS takes place annually in the second and third week of January at the TCF Center in Detroit . The event is organized by the Detroit Auto Dealers Association . Over 800,000 visitors are expected on the two press days, two trade visitor days and nine public days.

After a six-year hiatus during which the company focused on a presence at the rival LA Auto Show , Porsche returned to NAIAS in 2014.

The NAIAS is of particular importance in the automotive industry because it is the first of the five major automotive trade fairs each year. The North American Car of the Year award for North American Car of the Year is also presented annually at NAIAS .

history

The Cobo Conference & Exhibition Center (2007)

The occasion was first held in 1907 as the Detroit Automobile Show , organized by the Detroit Area Dealer Association . 17 exhibitors showed their vehicles in Riverview Park . With a nine-year hiatus due to World War II and the Korean War (1943–1953), the Detroit Automobile Show took place every year, initially on a date in February. It was later carried out at the Light Guard Armory , the Wayne Gardens Pavilion, and the Michigan State Fairgrounds , among others . The current venue, the TCF Center, was moved into in 1965, at that time this hall was still called the Cobo Conference & Exhibition Center .

In 1957, European manufacturers , including Jaguar , Volvo , Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, exhibited in Detroit for the first time. With the expansion of the Cobo Center , the Detroit Auto Show in 1989 moved from a regional American to an international trade fair and became NAIAS. The first world premieres included the introduction of the new Lexus and Infiniti brands . Since then, NAIAS has established itself as one of the most important automobile fairs in the world.

In 2014/15, the Detroit Auto Show was fourth in terms of visitor numbers, behind the auto shows in Paris, Frankfurt and Beijing.
