Car of the Year (North America)
Car of the Year in North America and Truck of the Year in North America (official: North American Car of the Year and North American Truck of the Year , in short NACTOY ) is a vehicle award that every year in early January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit will be given. The awards were given for the first time in 1994.
Procedure
There is a choice of different vehicles and trucks, which are either completely new or have been significantly redesigned and which should come on the market shortly after the award ceremony at the latest. Another prerequisite is a “calculated annual sales” of more than 5,000 cars (in the car category) or 2,000 trucks in order to exclude single items and small series.
As a first step, a maximum of 50 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada nominate their favorites from these vehicles by giving each of them 25 points per category. No fewer than these 25 points may be awarded in total, and a maximum of ten for a single vehicle; each juror is only allowed to score ten points. An independent auditing firm determines the three most nominated vehicles and trucks and reports them in alphabetical order. If there are more than one third place with equal points, all of these vehicles will be listed.
In a second step, the journalists give points again for these vehicles; the same auditing company evaluates the ballot papers.
They rate innovation, design, safety, handling and price. The evaluation will be published at the international auto show in Detroit, where the award ceremony will also take place.
