The Cadillac ATS is a mid-range model of the US vehicle brand Cadillac from the General Motors group, which came on the domestic market in September 2012. The long version Cadillac ATS-L was available on the Chinese market between 2014 and 2019.

The successor model CT4 was presented in May 2019 .

Conception and production

The car replaced the Cadillac BLS . Unlike the BLS, which was originally developed as Cadillac for Europe, the ATS is also designed for the US market. The rear-wheel drive vehicle is the first vehicle on the new GM Alpha platform . This platform is a front-engine, rear-wheel drive architecture, which is particularly weight-reduced through the use of light metals and special design features. The model will be assembled in the Lansing Grand River Assembly in Lansing .

Before the ATS, the Cadillac CTS was Cadillac's smallest model for the American market. In terms of price, this was based on the Audi A4 , BMW 3 Series , Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Lexus IS , but in terms of size on the BMW 5 Series , since General Motors wrongly assumed that buyers of these cars would buy a vehicle the size of a 5 Series Would prefer price of a 3 series. However, this turned out to be a mistake as customers of these vehicles didn't want a bigger car. Therefore, General Motors started developing a smaller model that should suit the tastes of the target group. The concept was based on the BMW 3 Series of the E46 series , which the developers considered the most dynamic and most driver-oriented iteration of this series.

Model history

In 2009 GM announced a future model at a press conference that should be smaller than the CTS and shown in the form of a design prototype in its original size.

The ATS was formally presented for the first time at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in 2012 and came onto the American market in 2012 as a 2013 model, initially as a sedan. In China, the sedan with the standard wheelbase was introduced in the fourth quarter of 2013. In the summer of 2014, the ATS-L variant with a wheelbase extended by 85 mm was presented and introduced for China. A coupé version, formally shown for the first time at NAIAS 2014, followed in 2015, while the sedan received a slight facelift, in which the grill and the revised Cadillac emblem of the coupé were adopted. In 2015, the appearance of the ATS-L was adapted to the face-lifted model with a standard wheelbase.

In mid-2018, Cadillac announced that production of the four-door notchback variant for the North American market would be discontinued at the end of the 2018 model year.

ATS-V

The top model of the series is the ATS-V version , formally presented for the first time at the LA Auto Show 2014, with a maximum output of 346 kW (470 PS) and a maximum torque of 603 Nm. However, no V8 engine is used as in the larger CTS-V, but the V6 engine with 3.6 liter displacement and twin turbocharger . The turbine wheels of the two chargers are made of titanium aluminide to keep the inertia low. When shifting with the manual six-speed gearbox, which is not available in Europe, you no longer have to lift the gas pedal, because the electronics automatically reduce the load. The ATS-V is also available with an eight -speed torque converter automatic transmission .

The most powerful ATS has also been revised in terms of the chassis. Compared to the less powerful models, it has a tighter set-up and stiffened stabilizers. Reinforced struts from the engine compartment to the underbody should ensure a 25 percent higher body rigidity. Electronically controlled and thus variable or adaptive dampers ("Magnetic Ride") are part of the standard equipment, as are the Brembo brakes and Recaro sports seats. Upon request, a "Track Package" is available, the mass thanks to carbon fiber to further reduce -Use and a special battery. The ATS-V is available either as a coupé or a sedan and will mainly compete against the BMW M3 and M4. The maximum speed is specified as 304 km / h.

In the 2019 model year, Cadillac will be offering a special model called the "Pedestal Edition" for the ATS-V Coupé to mark the 15th anniversary of the V-Series models.

safety

When carried out for the 2013 model year US NCAP - Crash test , the vehicle received a total score of five stars in which the ATS-V a total score of four stars for model year 2017th

Engines

In Germany, the ATS was initially only offered with the 2.0-l turbo engine with a maximum output of 203 kW (276 hp) since the end of 2012. The ATS is available with both rear-wheel drive and 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission or with all-wheel drive and 6-speed automatic transmission.

The ATS-L for China was initially available with a 2.0 l turbo engine in two engine versions: as a 25T with a maximum output of 169 kW and as a 28T with a maximum output of 205 kW. After the facelift, the 25T level was dropped.

The engines used are a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine with a maximum output of 151 kW (205 PS), a 2.0-l turbo engine with a maximum output of 203 kW (276 PS), a 3.6-l V6 engine with a maximum output of 239 kW (325 PS) and a 3.6-liter V6 twin turbo engine with a maximum output of 346 kW (470 PS). Later, at least for Europe, a diesel engine that has not yet been specified is to follow.
