The Cadillac Eldorado Brougham was one of the US carmaker Cadillac four-door hardtop - Limousine the top price category, which was produced from 1957 to 1960 in three versions.
Models
Series 1 (1957 and 1958)
The first Eldorado Brougham was based on several design studies, including the Cadillac La Espada, Cadillac Park Avenue and the Eldorado Brougham Town Car , which anticipated the Brougham's body style.
In January 1957, Cadillac presented the Eldorado Brougham as the top model of the brand and the group. At $ 13,074 , the price was $ 10,000 lower than manufacturing costs to make the vehicle affordable to buyers in the first place. At that time, this amount corresponded to the price of seven VW Beetles , based on today's purchasing power around 98,755 euros . With the presentation of the model, the manufacturer introduced double headlights. In order to get an approval for this in the USA, the approval laws had to be changed. Up to this period only single headlights were permitted.
Compared to the regular Cadillac sedans of the 1957 model year, the Eldorado Brougham was distinguished by its completely redesigned roof made of polished stainless steel, the rear-hinged rear doors (so-called suicide doors in German ) and other tail fins; the fins of the Eldorado Brougham usually anticipated the designs of next year's regular Cadillac models. Furthermore, the equipment was more extensive, because countless electric motors made getting in and out, opening the trunk and the hood, and adjusting the seat as comfortable as possible. For the passenger there was a perfume vaporizer and a small handkerchief dispenser in the glove compartment. There were 125 different color combinations for the interior in order to be able to offer buyers an individual design of their Brougham.
Technically, the Eldorado Brougham differed primarily through a modified frame that was 89 mm shorter and the standard air suspension , which was, however, very vulnerable. It often happened that the air suspension failed and you had to bring your Brougham to the workshop. Due to the high susceptibility of the suspension, Cadillac installed a new steel suspension free of charge. In the first year, the drive was provided by the six-liter V8 with two quadruple carburettors and 325 SAE gross horsepower, which was also installed in the other Cadillac models for an extra charge.
For the 1958 model year there were some minor changes to the technology. In the engine compartment there was now a version of the six-liter with three double carburetors and 345 gross SAE horsepower.
Series 2: 1959
The models 1959 (introduced in March 1959) and 1960 were based on the regular Cadillac frame (wheelbase 330 cm) and were manufactured by Pininfarina in Turin for reasons of cost, but also to convey additional exclusivity . Pininfarina was also responsible for the design of the body. Stylistically, apart from the shape of the roof and the tail fins, it was similar to the regular Cadillacs. In detail, however, it anticipated design features from the regular 1960 model year. As in the Eldorado Biarritz and Seville, which were produced in parallel , a variant of the new 6.4-liter V8 was used, which achieved 345 gross SAE horsepower with three double carburettors.
Series 3: 1960
The 1960 model made the fundamental design changes of the regular Cadillac models, but received a strongly accentuated decorative edge in the area of the lower rear fenders, which was seen again on all Cadillac models from 1961. At the end of the 1960 model year, the Eldorado Brougham was taken out of the range. A total of 904 copies were made.
