The Cadillac Series 62 was a model range offered from 1940 to 1964 by the US automobile manufacturer General Motors under the Cadillac brand .
Model history
In the 1940 model year, the Cadillac range was divided into the Series 60S (Sixty Special), Series 62 and Series 75.
The Series 62 replaced the Series 61 offered in 1939 as the cheapest Cadillac model. It was powered by the 5.7-liter V8 with upright valves and 135 hp, which was taken over from its predecessor. Two-door coupés and convertibles and a five-seat touring sedan and a four-door convertible were offered. The wheelbase of the 62 was 327.6 cm (+7.6 cm compared to the Series 61 of the previous year).
From model year 1941, the old Series 61 experienced a comeback, because it now served as a replacement for the discontinued sister brand LaSalle , which had offered cheaper models of the upper middle class under Cadillac management from 1927 to 1940. The 62 moved up one step in the Cadillac hierarchy.
In 1941 the 5.7-liter V8 was boosted to 150 hp; the four-door convertible was discontinued in the shortened model year 1942. The Series 62 belonged to the C-platform family from General Motors and was thus related to various models from Oldsmobile and Buick , while the 61 was based on the group's shorter B-platform.
When Cadillac resumed production after the end of the war in May 1946, the 62 was also back in unchanged form. For model year 1948 the 62, like all Cadillacs, received a new body with the first tail fin approaches; The wheelbase and dimensions were now identical to the entry-level model 61, so that the 62 was only a better equipped 61 from now on. The model range also included Club Coupe, Cabriolet and Sedan, powered by the 5.7-liter, which was replaced from model year 1949 by a new 5.4-liter V8 with overhead valves (160 hp).
For the 1950 model year, the Coupe DeVille with hardtop coupé body and without a B-pillar appeared as part of the 62 series . In 1952 the output of the 5.4 liter V8 increased to 190, 1953 to 210 and 1954 to 230 hp. From 1956, the Sedan de Ville, a hardtop sedan, supplemented the 62 series program. The Cadillac Eldorado luxury convertible introduced in 1953, together with its coupé variant released in 1955, also officially belonged to the 62 family in the first few years. In 1955 the engine output was further increased to 250 hp. In 1956 the engine was enlarged to six liters displacement (285 hp, 1957: 300, 1957: 310 hp). In 1958, in addition to the regular 62 sedan, an “extended deck” version with a rear that was almost 25 cm longer was added to the range. From model year 1959, the DeVille and Eldorado models were officially spun off from the 62 series and run as their own model series (internally called Series 6300 and Series 6400). From 1959 a larger 6.4-liter V8 was also used in all models (in the 62 with 325 hp). The longer extended deck variant was no longer available after a year, instead the 62 sedan was offered from 1959 to 1964 with four or six side windows and a different roof line. This was joined by a Town Sedan four-door in the 1962 model year with a rear section that was almost 20 cm shorter. In the last model year of the 62, 1964, the convertible was discontinued.
From model year 1965, the Series 62 was replaced by the Cadillac Calais .
From 1940 to 1964, a total of just under 1.39 million copies of the 62 were made (plus a total of 18,257 Eldorado models from 1953 to 1958).
