A Cadillac Escalade is an SUV or pick-up of the brand Cadillac from General Motors . Chassis from the GM group serve as the basis for the series, with the Escalade serving the upper market segment. The first generation came on the market in 1998.

The model is available in three body styles, which were introduced at different times:

  • Escalade: The variant introduced in autumn 1998 based on the GMT 400 chassis, like the Chevrolet Tahoe .
  • ESV: The long version introduced at the beginning of 2002 based on the GMT-800 chassis, like the Chevrolet Suburban .
  • EXT: A pickup version introduced in mid-2002 based on the GMT-800 chassis.

The first generation of the Escalade was introduced in the fall of 1998 as a direct competitor to the Lincoln Navigator . The GMT-400 chassis served as the basis . Except for the emblems, the Escalade was similar to the GMC Yukon Denali then on the market . General Motors wanted to position its premium brand Cadillac as quickly as possible in the luxury SUV market .

The same 5.7-liter V8 engine (called the 5.7L Vortec 5700 V8 by GM ) was used for the engine as in the GMC Yukon . The vehicles of this generation were all equipped with the all-wheel drive system Autotrac 4 × 4 from GM. The first generation was sold 52,435 times in the US.

The second generation appeared in January 2001 on the new GMT-800 chassis as a vehicle of the 2002 model year. Until the first generation was sold, both generations were sold at the same time. Visually, this generation clearly differs from its predecessor. From this model year, both a 2WD and a 4WD system were offered.

The Escalade EXT was first introduced in spring 2002 . This pickup version has a vehicle cabin for five people who can get on through four doors. The EXT version, which is 610 mm longer, is based on the longer chassis of the Chevrolet Suburban / GMC Yukon XL.

The Escalade ESV was available from autumn 2002 . This long version of the vehicle also offered 610 mm more length and more space for luggage or an additional row of seats. Like the EXT version, the ESV version is based on the longer chassis of the Chevrolet Suburban / GMC Yukon XL.

Two engines were available as motorization. The 5.3-liter V8 engine known from the Chevrolet Tahoe of the same model year ( 5.3L Vortec 5300 V8 ) and a high-output version of the 6.0-liter V8 engine ( 6.0L Vortec HO 6000 V8 ), which was installed in the GMC Yukon Denali of the same model year. From the beginning of 2003 the ESP system "Stabilitrac" was part of the standard equipment. In autumn 2003 the list of standard equipment was expanded again. The equipment now included individual seats in the rear as well as a tire pressure control system (in all models except for the EXT version).

A platinum edition of the vehicle appeared in 2005 . The special features of this version included 20-inch chrome wheels, heated and cooled cup holders, three DVD screens and some chrome trim.

The third generation of the Escalade based on the GMT-900 chassis was presented in spring 2006. In the first few months of sales, the vehicles were only available as 4WD variants, then also as 2WD variants. In contrast to the optical change between the first and second generation of the Escalade, this generation largely follows the basic design of its predecessor. In general, the body was slightly rounded and drawn softer.

The third generation of the Cadillac Escalade is powered by a 6.2 liter V8 engine ( 6.2L Vortec 6200 V8 ). In addition, a 6.0-liter V8 engine ( 6.0L Vortec 6000 V8 ) has been available as a full hybrid since summer 2008 . The formal presentation took place at the South Florida International Auto Show 2007 in Miami. Purely electric driving is therefore possible over short distances at up to 40 km / h.

Since the vehicle has almost all of the standard equipment, there have been only minor improvements in the various model years over the years, e.g. B. the "Magnetic Selective Ride Control" chassis known from many Cadillac models .

The Platinum Edition includes LED main headlights, heated and cooled cup holders, reversing camera, high-quality leather upholstery, navigation system, DVD entertainment system and ventilated front seats.

As with its predecessor, the third generation has also been available since spring 2007 as an EXT pickup variant and the ESV long version . This time the EXT offers an increased length of 490 mm and the ESV a plus of 520 mm compared to the normal Escalade. The ESV is based on the Chevrolet Suburban / GMC Yukon XL, the EXT on the Chevrolet Avalanche.

In Russia the vehicle is sold under the name Cadillac DUU .
