The Cadillac Calais is a model built from 1964 to 1976 by the US car manufacturer General Motors under the Cadillac brand .

Model history

For model year 1965, the Calais replaced the previous Cadillac entry-level model Series 62 . Above the Calais, the Cadillac range included the DeVille models on the same wheelbase but with more equipment, as well as the Cadillac Sixty Special sedan on a longer wheelbase and the even longer State limousine of the Series 75 .

With the model change in 1965, the Cadillac models were given a conventional ladder frame instead of the X-frame that had been used since 1958. When it was launched, the Calais was available as a two-door hardtop coupé and as a four-door sedan with or without B-pillars . The drive was taken over by a seven-liter V8 and a three-speed automatic called Turbo-Hydramatic. The equipment of the Calais was a little less lavish than in the case of the more expensive DeVille, which it undercut by around 360 dollars, but was very extensive for the time and ranged from servo brakes to internally adjustable exterior rearview mirrors to front and rear seat belts. The Calais was available from $ 5059 - a comparable, but much weaker and smaller Mercedes 300 SE cost 8,662 dollars in the USA at the same time.

In 1969 the V8 grew to a displacement of 7.7 liters and the four-door B-pillar sedan was omitted. In 1972, General Motors generally replaced the SAE horsepower specifications that had previously been used by net horsepower; the 7.7 liter was now specified with 223 instead of 375 hp.

In 1974 there was a major facelift , in the course of which the coupé received a completely new roof line with B-pillars. The hardtop sedan now had small side windows in the C-pillars. The 7.7 liter had only 208 hp with four carburettors. From model year 1975 , the 8.2-liter V8 (193 hp), originally from the Eldorado , was installed in all large Cadillac models ; From March 1975 this machine was also available with electronic injection and 218 hp at an extra charge ($ 600).

With the downsizing of the classic Cadillac models for the 1977 model year, the Calais, which had faded into the background in terms of sales over the years in favor of the DeVille, was abandoned.
