The Cadillac Type 51 is a 1914/15 model of the American automaker Cadillac with a V8 engine.

The structurally related successor models of the Type 51 ended with the names:

  • Type 53 (model year e1916)
  • Type 55 (model year e1917)
  • Type 57 (model years 1918/19)
  • Type 59 (model year e1920/21)
  • Type 61 (model years 1922/23)

Type 51 (model year 1915)

In September 1914, Cadillac presented the new Type 51 with a V8 engine as the successor to the Thirty- based models. At the same time the change from right to left hand drive took place.

On a ladder frame with a wheelbase of 310 cm, Cadillac offered 9 different bodies, from the two-seater roadster to the five- to seven-seater touring car to the closed Imperial Sedan with seven seats. All of these versions were powered by a new 5.15 liter, 4.25: 1 compressed 90 ° V8 (bore × stroke: 79.4 × 130.2 mm) with water cooling, cylinders cast in pairs, and aluminum-copper engine block and standing valves. The power transmission was done by a three-speed gearbox.

Type 53 (model year 1916)

As early as July 1915, Cadillac introduced the Type 53 of the 1916 model year, which was characterized by slightly modified bodies. For the first time, the plant also offered special bodies (ambulances, hearses and police patrol cars) on a special, extended chassis (wheelbase 368 cm), the forerunner of the much later commercial chassis models.

Type 55 (model year 1917)

The 1917 Type 55 went on sale in August 1916. Again there were minor changes to the superstructure; In some models, the windshield was no longer vertical, but for the first time inclined slightly backwards. The frame was revised and the wheelbase was lengthened to 317.5 cm and received two additional cross tubes, the engine modified pistons with larger oil return openings. The sedan models now had a wheelbase of 132 inches (335.3 cm).

Type 57 (model years 1918/19)

The Type 57 received a completely new three-speed gearbox and a modified engine hood with 9 side air outlets each, the V8 new lightweight pistons and removable cylinder heads. The regular model range swelled to 17 different variants, from the two-seater roadster to the "US Government Limousine" for representatives of the federal government and a seven-seater called Suburban on the extra-long wheelbase of the special bodies. In 1919 the range of models was reduced to 14 variants; Among other things, the special body hearse was carried to the grave.

Type 59 (model years 1920/21)

In the Type 59, there were again minor changes to the body and technology; the range of models in this series, which was manufactured in three series, was reduced to ten versions.

Type 61 (model years 1922/23)

The Type 61, which was only offered with a medium wheelbase of 335.3 cm, was also available in three slightly different series. What they all had in common was a higher hood made of aluminum, windscreen washer system and interior rearview mirror.

In September 1923 the Type 51/61 series was replaced by the V-63 ; by then, a total of 160,033 copies of the first Cadillac eight-cylinder had been built.
