The Cadillac BLS is a mid-range vehicle from the US vehicle manufacturer Cadillac , which is the only Cadillac model so far designed exclusively for the European market.

history

Although Cadillac also enjoys the reputation of a premium brand in Europe , the heavy cars with large gasoline engines found few buyers there. Bob Lutz , the vice director of GM, intended to align sales of the Cadillac brand more globally and to address more local markets. In the summer of 2003, the Cadillac Design Center came up with the idea of a Cadillac model for Europe, for this purpose contact was made with the design department of Saab Automobile (which was GM's European premium brand at the time), and agreed to work on the idea separately for the time being and later to meet. The joint presentation took place in Sweden in November 2003.

The BLS was finally developed as type YSCF by an American-Swedish team at Saab Automobile, where production then took place. The design team in Mölnlycke included a. the Cadillac designer Chip Thole, who designed the exterior, Lars Falk, who was responsible for the interior, as well as Simon Padian and Michael Mauer. The foreseeable small number of units led to a consistent common parts strategy, but the BLS does not have a sheet metal part in common with its sister model Saab 9-3 , the BLS-specific development costs were 1 billion crowns (around 140 million USD at the time). The vehicle was presented formally for the first time as a concept study at the Geneva Motor Show in 2005 and as a series model at the IAA of the same year.

In the spring of 2006, the BLS notchback sedan came onto the market. The car was offered in four equipment lines: Business, Elegance, Sport and Sport Luxury.

Internally, the car was called the B-segment Luxury Sedan , from which the name is likely to be derived. The purpose of the model was to raise awareness of the brand in Europe and to improve the underutilization at Saab a little, prior announcements by the manufacturer were based on the assumption that the number of units would be low, as the BLS was two different vehicles in the same segment in Europe. Although German brands have long since developed models in the USA and built them for them, the German press was not enthusiastic about the opposite way, the FAZ wrote: “Why should you buy an American car in Germany for any other reason than a weakness for? American cars? ”The sales figures fell short of expectations, for example 282 units were sold in Germany in 2007, 500 were planned. In addition to Europe, the notchback sedan was also offered in several other markets, including South Africa, Arabia, South Korea and Mexico. At the beginning of 2007, the BLS Wagon was presented as the first station wagon in the history of Cadillac. The formal presentation took place at the IAA 2007.

The Dutch company Kroymans, which operates in Europe a. a. sold the Cadillac brand as general importer, went into bankruptcy in February 2009, at the same time it became apparent that GM was planning to liquidate its ailing subsidiary Saab Automobile (where the BLS was also manufactured). The production of the BLS was discontinued in June 2009, only for the Russian market in small numbers copies were assembled under license by Avtotor in Kaliningrad until the end of 2010 . In total, only 7356 copies were made. In September 2012, the ATS was presented as the successor model, and sales in Europe followed at the end of 2012.

technology

The BLS is based on the GM Epsilon platform and therefore has front-wheel drive. There is a close relationship with the Saab 9-3 ; both models were built in the same factory in Sweden. The car was classified in the middle class, but is much larger than other cars in this category, about 90 mm longer than the Audi A4 of that time. The panes are fully retractable, which is only structurally possible with a few models. The audio systems were supplied by Bose.

Engines

On the engine side, the range is based heavily on the engines of the Saab 9-3. The 1.9-liter four-cylinder is the first turbo-charged diesel engine in a Cadillac ; previously there was an Oldsmobile diesel in 1979 in what was then the Cadillac Seville . The common rail unit is a joint development between Fiat and GM and has an output of 110 kW (150 hp) and 132 kW (180 hp).

The gasoline engines are also turbo units from Saab; The 2.0-liter engine is offered in two output levels with 129 kW (175 PS) and 154 kW (210 PS) and a 2.8-liter V6 engine, from GM-Holden (Australia), with 188 kW ( 255 hp).

Furthermore, a variant of the weaker 2.0-liter four-cylinder, called Flexpower , is offered, which can be operated with both petrol and E85 and whose output increases by 18 kW to 147 kW in E85 operation. All engines are available with a six-speed manual gearbox or, at an additional cost, with a five-speed or six-speed automatic.
