Cadillac Fleetwood (1947)

Under the name Fleetwood , the US car manufacturer General Motors marketed its particularly luxuriously equipped and expensive models with the Cadillac brand, which belongs to the group .

The name Fleetwood was used partly as an unofficial or semi-official additional name for some models, and partly as an official and fully valid model name.

Model history

Fleetwood (1946–1985)

The name Fleetwood goes back to the Fleetwood Metal Body Co. , a respected, originally independent bodybuilder who produced small series, special and one-off bodies for numerous, primarily luxurious vehicles in the pre-war period. The company was bought by the Fisher Body Company and with this in 1926 it became wholly owned by General Motors . The special bodies created in the 1930s were almost exclusively reserved for Cadillac. Fleetwood was increasingly responsible for particularly upscale equipment on the Fisher bodies produced for Cadillac.

In the post-war years, the Cadillac models Sixty Special and Series 75 were semi-officially named Fleetwood , as did the Cadillac Eldorado Brougham from model year 1958 . From 1965, Sixty Special, Eldorado and 75 were officially named Fleetwood Sixty Special, Fleetwood Eldorado and Fleetwood 75.

From model year 1975, the Fleetwood Sixty Special was replaced by the Fleetwood Brougham . From 1976 the Fleetwood Eldorado was again simply called Eldorado, at the same time the Fleetwood 75 became the Fleetwood limousine. Details on these models can be found under the respective lemmas.

As an independent model name, Fleetwood was used again from autumn 1985, which referred to the better equipped variants of the new, smaller and front-wheel drive Cadillac DeVille . A sedan and a coupé were available, powered by the in-house 4.1-liter V8 engine.

From 1987 the Fleetwood was replaced by the Fleetwood d'Elegance , which was only available as a four-door model. In addition, there was now a Fleetwood 60 Special (also only as a sedan) in the range on a longer wheelbase (2941 mm instead of 2814 mm) .

From 1989 to 1992 the Fleetwood d'Elegance was again only known as Fleetwood and the coupé variant was back on offer. In 1989 the wheelbase of Fleetwood four-door and Fleetwood 60 Special was standardized to 2891 mm; the Fleetwood Coupé retained the shorter wheelbase of the DeVille models.

From 1988 the Fleetwood was powered by a V8 engine enlarged to 4.5 liters, the displacement of which increased further to 4.9 liters in the 1991 model year.

For the 1993 model year, which began in autumn 1992, the large Cadillac Brougham with rear-wheel drive was replaced by the new Cadillac Fleetwood, which was technically related to the Chevrolet Caprice and Buick Roadmaster and thus continued to be driven via the rear wheels.

With a length of 5715 mm, it was the largest automobile made in the USA at the time. It was powered by a 5.7 liter V8 engine with gasoline injection and an initial maximum output of 185 hp (138 kW) and from model year 1994 of 260 hp (194 kW), which was coupled with a four-speed automatic transmission ( 4L60E ). In addition to the basic model, there was a richly equipped Fleetwood Brougham on offer.

A total of 101,698 copies of this last Fleetwood had been produced by summer 1996. Production at GM's Arlington , Texas , US facility ended in November 1996.
