4L60E
The 4 L60-E (and the similar 4 L65-E ) is a range of 4-speed automatic transmissions made by General Motors Corporation . The gearbox was designed for motors installed lengthways. It is a further development of the Turbo-Hydramatic 700R4 , which was originally produced in 1982.
The 4L60-E and 4L65-E of Toledo transmission in Toledo (Ohio) and Romulus transmission in Romulus (Michigan) and Ramos Arizpe ( Mexico built).
The 4L60-E family transmissions use 2 shift solenoid valves, initially referred to as Solenoid A & Solenoid B. This was later changed to Solenoid 1-2 & 2-3 to comply with OBD II (On Board Diagnostics Revision 2) regulations. By activating or deactivating the solenoids in a pattern predetermined by the PCM, 4 different gear ratios can be selected. The solenoid pattern, sometimes referred to as the solenoid firing order, is as follows:
1-2 solenoid | 2-3 solenoid | |
1st gear | on | on |
2nd gear | out | on |
3rd gear | out | out |
4th gear | on | out |
There are two gearbox variants that are designed for different loads. The main difference between the two gearbox variants is the number of pinions in their planetary gears . The 4L60-E has four while the 4L65-E has five. Other components of the 4L60-E were reinforced when the 4L65-E was introduced. These were incorporated into the 4L60-E in 2002.

4L60-E
According to General Motors' new naming convention, the THM700 was renamed "4L60". The electronic version is called 4L60-E (RPO M30). The renaming was done gradually. Beginning in 1993 for trucks, vans and SUVs, then in 1994 for rear-wheel drive cars.
In 1996 the “bolt-on” bell housing for S-10 trucks and S-10 Blazers was abolished and in 1998 for all other applications.
From 1998 a new 300 mm torque converter with a higher capacity was installed. The 4L60-E is designed up to a torque of 488 Nm.
