The Holden Caprice is a luxury limousine produced by Holden , the Australian General Motors subsidiary, from 1990 onwards. The entry-level version Holden Statesman was produced until 2010, the Caprice until October 2017. The Caprice and Statesman were the first Holden models since the Holden Brougham . However, upper-class models were offered under the Statesman brand between 1971 and 1984 . Both model names were adopted from this.

Statesman / Caprice (HQ / HJ / HX / HZ / WB, 1971–1984)
In July 1971, the Statesman brand with the Statesman Custom and Statesman Deville models was created as the successor to the Holden Brougham . The engines ranged from a 3.3-liter R6, a 4.15-liter and a 5.0-liter V8 to a 5.7-liter V8. The 5.7 liter versions were exported to New Zealand and South Africa under the names Chevrolet 350. Technically, the Statesman models were based on the usual Holden models, but had a wheelbase that was 7.6 cm longer, which benefited the space in the rear, and a modified body.

In 1990 new Statesman and Caprice models of the VQ series, derived from the contemporary Holden Commodore VN , made their debut . Statesman and Caprice shared the longer wheelbase with the Commodore station wagon and were about 11 cm longer than the Commodore four-door. The bodies with a modified roof line, reminiscent of the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme model, were independent . In addition, the luxury models received the multi-link rear axle as standard, which only took the place of the rigid axle on the Commodore at a surcharge.
In 1991 the series II of the VQ series appeared with (in the Caprice) standard ABS; the Statesman had the Buick- designed 3.8-liter V6 of the Commodore as standard , the Caprice the 5.0-liter V8.
The Statesman / Caprice VQ series produced 9,396 units, 188 of which were exported.
The Statesman / Caprice VR , a heavily redesigned VQ, had a new electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission and a redesigned, more powerful 3.8-liter V6 with higher compression and roller-bearing rocker arms.
In the Statesman / Caprice VS , a further revised V6 of the Ecotec generation and a modified four-speed automatic transmission were used.
In September 1996 the VS series II debuted, which was also available for the first time with a supercharged version of the Buick V6.
In June 1998 the unofficial Series III followed with minor changes.

In 1999 Holden presented a completely new Statesman / Caprice WH based on the Holden Commodore VS, powered by the well-known 3.8-liter V6 as a naturally aspirated or supercharged engine or a 5.7-liter V8. Again, the body was clearly different from that of the Commodore, although the windshield and doors were identical. As a left-hand drive, the Caprice was exported to the Middle East under the name Chevrolet Caprice .
In 2003 the WH received a facelift with a more angular front section and thus became a WK Statesman / Caprice .
In August 2004 the Statesman / Caprice WL debuted , which was also sold in China as the Buick Royaum and in South Korea as the Daewoo Statesman .
The Statesman / Caprice of the WH, WK and WL series produced a total of 137,206 copies in six years, the vast majority of which, 101,314, were exported.

Parallel to the completely newly developed Commodore VE, Holden showed the new Statesman / Caprice WM for the first time in July 2006 , both of which are based on General Motors' Zeta platform.
Compared to the Commodore VE, the wheelbase is almost 10 cm longer, the body has a third side window at the rear. The engines available are the 3.6-liter V6 and six-liter V8 adopted from the Commodore.
The second series of the Caprice WM has been available since 2010. At the same time, the Statesman model was discontinued. The 3.6-liter V6 was replaced by a 3.0-liter V6 with gasoline direct injection . The V8 engine is now E85 capable.
