The SsangYong Korando is an off-road vehicle with a short wheelbase and three doors in the first two generations and five doors in the third generation. The model is produced by the South Korean company SsangYong .

Originally, the Korando was a license replica of the Jeep CJ-7 in the late 1980s and early 1990s , the successor model was manufactured from 1997 to 2006. However, only the second series model is discussed below. It is based on a sturdy ladder frame with a rigid axle at the rear and independent wheel suspension at the front and was available as a closed model and as a convertible.

Three diesel and two petrol engines were offered. The top model was the E32 with a 3.2 liter in-line six-cylinder engine and 209 to 212 hp, which in Europe was only offered with a 4-speed automatic. All other engines were also available with this automatic or optionally with a 5-speed manual transmission. The Korando has an electronically switchable all-wheel drive and a reduction gear that can also be switched on electronically using a rotary switch in the cockpit. The only exception here is the top model E32, which is equipped with permanent all-wheel drive and only has a switchable reduction ratio. In addition, there is an electronic differential brake for both axles, controlled by the ABS, the drive from the front to the rear axle is rigid when the drive is engaged. This equipment makes the Korando an extremely off-road vehicle unlike most modern SUVs. The engines are developments by Mercedes-Benz which SsangYong itself produces under license and which also achieve the longevity of the originals from MB. The other components of the drive come from the USA. The manual and intermediate transmissions are supplied by the company Borg-Warner , the axles come from Dana , as with Jeep . The design of the Korando was based on the first Korando or the Jeep CJ-7 as a modern interpretation of the same from the pen of the English designer Ken Greenley.

The load is kg when delivered around 600 and, by weight increase to 2.8 tons GVW be expanded kg to around 900th The permissible trailer load of 3500 kg for all engines is remarkable .

In 1997 the Korean group Daewoo took over the majority of SsangYong Motor Company and offered the models Daewoo Chairman, Daewoo Musso and Daewoo Korando from 1998 and 1999 respectively . Daewoo only made optical retouching on the vehicles like other lights and other radiator grilles, technically they remained unchanged. When the end of Daewoo came to an end on the German market at the end of 2002, SsangYong resumed sales of its models under its own name at the beginning of 2003. The supply of spare parts for the Korando is unproblematic despite the withdrawal of SsangYong from the German market, as here, in addition to the official service stations, a few spare parts dealers also import directly from Korea and have the appropriate know-how. Engine spare parts are even available from Mercedes-Benz.

After the end of production in Korea, the Russian company TagAZ acquired the production facilities and continues to produce the Korando and the technically related Musso model.

The fifth generation of the Korando has been available on the market since 2010. It is a purely five-door sports utility vehicle. The design of the vehicle comes from Giorgio Giugiaro and was first presented to the world with the SsangYong C200 at the Salón Internacional del Automóvil Barcelona in 2009. The new generation is available as a closed sports utility vehicle in the compact class as well as a convertible . The model is currently only available with a 175 hp 2-liter TDI engine. In most markets, the new model replaces the old SsangYong Actyon , whereupon importers usually only offer its sports version ( pickup ). In Russia , where the new model rolls off the production line at Sollers , it is marketed as SsangYong New Actyon .
