Company history

Chairman of the Supervisory Board Pawan Goenka and CEO Johng-Sik Choi at the IAA 2017

The company was founded in January 1954 as Ha Dong-hwan Motor Workshop , which manufactured jeeps for the United States Army . In 1963 this company merged with Dongbang Motor Co., Ltd., which was founded in 1962 . to Ha Dong-hwan Motor Co., Ltd . The export business started in 1966 with the "H7H R-66" bus.

A source states that the brand name was Dong-A from 1954 to 1988 . Another source lists the earlier brand names as Ha Dong-hwan from 1954 to 1977 and Dong-A from 1977 to 1988.

The Shinjin Motor Co. (not to be confused with shinjin motors ) founded in 1974 with AMC , the joint venture Shinjin Jeep engine , the 1979 Shinjin Motor Co. and renamed in 1981 to Geohwa Co. was. This company was merged with Dong-A in 1985.

From 1976 Ha Dong-hwan built special vehicles. The company was renamed Dong-A Motor in 1977 . In 1983 the model name Korando was taken over from the Shinjin jeeps. In November 1986 the SsangYong Group joined the company, took over the British specialty vehicle manufacturer Panther Westwinds and changed the company name again to SsangYong Motor .

In 1991 a technology partnership was agreed with Daimler-Benz , which spanned various agreements and led to a 5% stake in January 1993. There were agreements on the development of vans (February 1991), gasoline engines (October 1992), passenger cars (February 1993) and diesel engines (November 1993).

In 1997, Daewoo Motors finally bought the majority stake in the company, whereby SsangYong vehicles and thus also Mercedes-Benz replicas were offered as identical models under the brand name Daewoo ( Badge Engineering ). Daewoo already sold SsangYong in 2000 because the conglomerate ( Korean: Jaebeol ) got into financial problems itself. At the end of October 2004, the Chinese automobile manufacturer SAIC ( Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation ) finally took over 48.9% of the shares in SsangYong Motors Company .

On 9 January 2009, the District Court of Seoul bankruptcy protection for SsangYong applied for. Four days later, production was temporarily suspended because the company could no longer pay the suppliers due to liquidity problems. However, on February 5, production at the Pyeongtaek and Changwon plants resumed.

Mahindra & Mahindra Limited , India , announced on August 23, 2010 that it had issued a memorandum of understanding to acquire the majority of SsangYong Motor Company. The transaction was completed in February 2011.
