history

Mercedes-Benz MB 100 (1992–1995) long wheelbase

The high payload variants of the MB 100 series - such as the MB 180 - were actually only intended for sales outside Germany and therefore, unlike in the country of manufacture (Spain), only play a subordinate role here. In Germany, the MB 100 was offered by Daimler-Benz from 1988 to 1995 to round off the lower range of commercial vehicles . The vehicle was with the 2.4-liter OM 616 diesel engine with 53 kW (72  PS ), most recently 55 kW (75 PS), as it was also used in the next larger 207 D , and also for sales outside Germany as the MB 100 Available with the 2.0 liter OM 615 diesel engine with 43–46 kW. The MB 100 was built in the factory of the former Industrias del Motor SA (IMOSA) in Vitoria-Gasteiz , a subsidiary of Auto Union (DKW) founded in the early 1950s . Competitive products included the VW Transporter and the Ford Transit , followed by the Mercedes-Benz Vito .

The basic concept is a front control arm with a longitudinally built-in engine and front-wheel drive and a non-self-supporting body on a double tube frame , and is licensed from the DKW-Schnellaster F1000 . The F1000 was equipped with a two-stroke engine and was also sold by DKW in Germany until 1965. It was not until 1988 that it returned to Germany and other central and northern European countries after being reworked as the MB 100. For a vehicle from the 1980s it was no longer up-to-date in some details (for example the torsion bar suspension on the front axle, which requires regular manual lubrication with a grease gun ), but due to its design, it had a very large cargo space in relation to the vehicle size and in this respect exceeded the models the competitor.

The combination of front engine , front-wheel drive and tubular frame made the MB 100 well suited as a basis for special bodies. In particular, sales vehicles , often with a significantly longer frame and rear double axle, but also tow trucks or furniture cases and even smaller buses were built on the chassis of the MB 100 by various vehicle manufacturers .

The MB 100 was revised for the 1992 model year. The external distinguishing feature was the now sloping radiator section. Among other things, the extended front was intended to increase the vehicle's passive safety .

After the production of the MB had expired in Vitoria 100, it was with a new, Asian bodywork until 2004 in Korea by Ssangyong built further and both under the brand name Ssangyong ( SsangYong Istana sold) and at Mercedes-Benz (MB 100 Istana). It was available in two wheelbases, short as the MB 100 and long as the MB 140. It was also available with a 2.3-liter diesel engine and a 2.2-liter gasoline engine. The MB 100 was also temporarily available as the Daewoo Istana. It was also produced in Vietnam until 2004 using parts sets supplied from Korea. It enjoyed great popularity throughout Asia and Central America, as well as in Australia.

After production was discontinued, the production facilities went to China to the then second-largest Ssangyong shareholder Shanghai Automotive Industry , where the Korean MB 100/140 version Istana is still being produced. However, no longer under the brand names Mercedes-Benz or Ssangyong, but as SAIC Istana.
