Towing service (platform vehicle)

Towing vehicles are commercial vehicles that can tow and usually recover motor vehicles .

Conceptual separation

Wrong parking , damaged or defective vehicles are recovered using a cable winch or crane and lifted at the front or rear using a crane or lifting goggles or attached using a tow bar.

In private as well as in customary language usage, tow trucks are also used for vehicles which transport other vehicles on a plateau. However, these are so-called rescue vehicles . Rescue vehicles (i.e. platform vehicles) that are also equipped with a crane or lifting goggles are also called special rescue vehicles. Platform vehicles are also known as low-loaders or, in English, as flat-bed tow trucks . Special recovery vehicles with a crane are also known as pick-away or simply pick .

However, these definitions are neither generally applicable nor recognized. This is also because the terms are misleading, because the towing vehicles are more likely to be used for salvage, while the salvage vehicles are usually used for removal or so-called towing.

Legal

Heavy-duty rescue vehicles are only allowed to transport one tractor or trailer individually on the tow goggles. In the case of a tractor unit (SZM) with a semi-trailer , another type is used in which the mobile towing glasses are removed in order to connect the two vehicles with a tow bar .

Lifting process

In preparation for the lifting process, the necessary supports are extended on the towing vehicle to ensure stability, then the fastenings are attached to the four wheels of the vehicle to be recovered. These are then connected by means of steel chains attached to the upper end with the eyes on the lifting device of the recovery crane, which is attached to the underside of a turntable. During the actual lifting operation is pass-by for vehicles locked until the mountain to vehicle over or on the loading area is and thus no longer protrudes into the roadway. This is justified with the risk of falling, that is, with accidental slipping off the hook. The vehicle to be towed (load) must also be secured with drag shoes .
