Johann Atrops

Johann Ludwig Atrops (born October 5, 1921 in Moers ; † May 26, 2001 ) was a German engineer and professor of civil engineering and founding rector of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences .

After graduating from the Adolfinum in Moers, Atrops studied at the universities of Cologne , Braunschweig and Karlsruhe . On October 1, 1953, he became a lecturer at the State Engineering School in Cologne. On April 29, 1957 he was appointed building officer in the technical school service. From 1966 to 1971 he held the chair for structural systems in the petroleum industry at the University of the West Indies ( Trinidad ), where he played a key role in the development of engineering training and, among other things, organized the first Caribbean welding conference in 1967 and later became President of the Caribbean Welding Association .

In 1971 Atrops took over the role of founding rector of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences. From 1974 he was active in several UNESCO projects in Indonesia , Brazil and Sudan . In 1976 he founded the Institute for Tropical Technology at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences. From 1980 to 1984 he was rector of the college. In 1984 he organized the first world conference for applied engineering.
