The truck models of the LK series (BM673–679) from Daimler-Benz were produced between 1984 and 1998. The new " L eichte K lasse" LK, internally also called LN2, replaced the LP. In 1998, the successor was introduced with the Atego .
Model history
After the predecessor had been in production unchanged in the basic concept for a good 18 years , the completely newly developed series, internally managed as LN 2 , came out in 1983 . When it was introduced, it covered the tonnages of 7, 8, 9, 11 and 13 tons of gross vehicle weight . The power range of the diesel engines ranged from 90 to 136 and 170 to 201 hp. This resulted in the model designations typical of Mercedes-Benz, the first or, in the case of four digits, the first two giving the total weight in tons, the last two - about a tenth of the engine output in hp. The most widespread model was the 7.5-tonner with 136 hp, with the designation 814 - now also internally without the previous addition LP.
Changes
The newly developed engines were in-line engines with four and six cylinders and direct injection ; the new driver's cab, which was now also tiltable in the smallest truck class, was striking. The relatively smooth-surfaced cabin was noticeable, among other things, by the sloping rearward-sloping lower edge of the side windows in the doors, which was already known from the T 1 transporter series introduced in 1977 and later introduced as a design feature in the heavy types .
The fenders under the cabin and the bumper were a little wider than the predecessor and made the new types appear more massive. Since the vehicle was no longer just intended as a pure local transport and distribution truck, there was also a fully-fledged long-haul cabin with two berths under a roof that was a little higher. From 1989 there was also an even heavier version with a total weight of 15 tons with 170, 211 (also in the other models instead of the 201 hp engine, but the designations continued to end with 20) and 240 hp. This means that by the time the successor, Atego, was introduced, the performance of the small models had reached their peak.
Since 1988 the series has been known as LK for light class , parallel to the revision of the large vehicles with the now official designation SK for heavy class and MK for the medium class. As of this year, the lighter models were optionally available with all-wheel drive, as expected, mainly for construction and fire fighting vehicles.
The tilting cabs of the new LK model series have been given a more modern shape. They were offered with a total weight of 6.5 to 13 tons under the model designation 609 to 1320. The power range of the engines was between 66 and 155 kW (90 and 211 hp), and there was now also a driver's cab for long-haul transport with an extended cab and 15 up to 19 tons total weight. Some of the large tonnages were also available as tippers or flatbed trucks.

The engines of the OM 364 (A / LA) series were also available in the buses O 301 and O 402 with 100 kW / 136 hp from 1984 and modified in the Unimog types 90/110/140 with 66 to 100 kW / 90 bis 136 hp and from 1986 in the MB-Trac (types 700 and 800: OM 364, 900: OM 364 A, 1000 and 1100: OM 366, 1300, 1400 and 1600: OM 366 A, 1800: OM 366 LA). The in-line six-cylinder OM 366 A with 5955 cm³ displacement and 125 kW / 170 hp was also available in the two bus models.
The T 2 transporter series also used the engine variants with 66 and 85 kW. The OM 366 (A / LA) series was used in the large Unimog models U1550, U1750 and U2150 (between 114 kW / 155 PS and 157 kW / 214 PS). The Forst-Trac as a special model variant of the MB-Trac used a version of the inline four-cylinder OM 364 with 77 kW / 105 PS.
