transmission
Manual transmission
A newly developed six-speed manual gearbox is used as the gearbox for the weaker engines . The three-shaft gear unit with the designation F-SG 310 is very compact with a length of 345 mm and has a low dry weight of 46 kg. The upper shaft with reverse gear and gears three and four do not run in the oil bath. This reduces the drag torque; shift comfort is also given in cold operation. The first two gears are synchronized via a triple cone, the following gears via a double cone. These measures also increase shift comfort. A Hall sensor detects the current gear position from the position of a magnet on the selector shaft. The automatic start-stop system and the reversing lights, which are standard in all models, are controlled by this. Gears are engaged by cables, the clutch is operated hydraulically. The shift forks are made of cast aluminum and are mounted on roller bearings in the transmission. This storage reduces the switching forces.
Double clutch
In contrast to the previous model, the automatic transmission is no longer a continuously variable version , but a dual clutch transmission developed in-house . The transmission called 7G-DCT is installed as standard in vehicles with the most powerful diesel and gasoline engines and is also available for all other engines at an additional cost.
It is a three-shaft transmission divided into two halves. The sub-transmissions each have their own multi-plate clutch that runs in an oil bath , which means that gear changes are possible without interrupting tractive power. The spread of the gears was selected to be high at 7.99 in order to provide sufficient torque in low gears and at the same time lower the engine speed in the higher gears. The 7G-DCT is 367 mm long and weighs 86 kg.
In spite of an oil filling quantity of only 6 liters of hydraulic oil, sufficient cooling is guaranteed because the oil is actively cooled. In addition to a mechanically driven oil pump, there is an additional electric pump that supplies the transmission with oil during a stop process when the engine is switched off. This means that restarting can take place without delay and the standard start-stop function can be implemented without any problems. In addition, the mechanical pump is supported by the electrical auxiliary pump at high loads. The hydraulic system of the mechanical parking lock is controlled electronically, which means that the gear selector lever can be positioned on the right behind the steering wheel. This created additional storage space in the center console.
The driver can choose between three transmission programs. The Economy program switches fully automatically and is designed for a fuel-efficient driving style. In Sport mode , the transmission also shifts automatically, with the reaction times being shortened for a sporty driving style. In the third mode, the driver shifts the gears manually using shift paddles behind the steering wheel. In the automatic shift programs, the driver can also carry out manual shift interventions, with the automatic mode being reactivated after 10 seconds without any further shift operations. This time is extended when driving downhill or on winding roads. Permanent communication between the transmission and engine control unit ensures improved efficiency.
landing gear
At the rear axle, a newly developed is four-link - rear axle used. In addition to improved driving behavior, this enables the later use of 4MATIC all - wheel drive . Initially, only variants that are driven by the front wheels are offered. Chassis setups are available, including the optional sports chassis with direct steering. The A-Class has a Dual Pinion EPS , an electromechanical steering system with an electric motor installed directly on the steering gear.
safety
The A-Class is equipped with Collision Prevention Assist as standard . This is a radar-based collision warning with adaptive brake assist . It reduces the risk of a rear-end collision through visual and acoustic warnings of detected obstacles. At the same time, the brake assistant prepares for the upcoming braking, which is initiated as soon as the driver clearly depresses the brake pedal. If the driver does not react, the vehicle brakes autonomously. (only for the facelift version)
For the first time , the preventive occupant protection system Pre-Safe, familiar from the larger model series, is available in the A-Class . The standard equipment includes the drowsiness warning system Attention Assist , the hold function of the brake and the hill start aid. Available as an option are the adaptive cruise control Distronic Plus , Adaptive Highbeam Assist, a Blind Spot and Lane Keeping Assist, a traffic sign recognition , a parking assistant , the voice control system LINGUATRONIC and a reversing camera.
paragraph
Around 40,000 vehicles were ordered within the first four weeks since the order was approved. More than 50,000 orders had been received by the end of August and 90,000 by mid-November. Originally, the W 176 was only supposed to be manufactured at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Rastatt . Because the demand exceeded expectations, the A-Class has also been produced by the Finnish company Valmet Automotive since the end of August 2013 .
At the official market launch in mid-September, the manufacturer counted 700,000 visitors across Europe, over 400,000 visitors across Germany and more than 9500 test drives within ten hours.
