The Mercedes-Benz W 21 was presented under the name Mercedes-Benz Type 200 in 1933. It was derived from the type 170 and later replaced the types Stuttgart 200 and Stuttgart 260 .
Mercedes-Benz Type 200 / Type 200 long (1933–1936)
The car was available as a two- and four-door touring car, two- and four-door sedan, three or four-seater convertible (with two doors) or sports two-seater. The type 200 long (wheelbase 3050 mm) was available as a six-seater Pullman sedan , Pullman landaulet , six-seat touring car , four-door sedan, streamlined sedan and convertible A, B and D.
Its side - controlled six - cylinder in - line engine with a displacement of 1961 cm³ develops 40 hp (29 kW) and accelerates the vehicle to 98 km / h. The rear wheels are driven via the four-speed gearbox with overdrive (1: 0.73) and the cardan shaft. All wheels have hydraulically operated drum brakes and are individually suspended, at the rear on a pendulum axle with coil springs, at the front on two transversely installed leaf springs.
These changes were a step forward compared to the previous model of the Stuttgart 200 type. However, the new cars were a bit simpler at about the same price, which was detrimental to the sales figures.
The Pullman limousine was very popular in the German Reich as a "power hitch" ( taxi ). In August 1934, the Opel 6 Pullman with 36 hp engine and the same wheelbase (3050 mm) came onto the market as a competitor, which at 5000 Reichsmarks (RM) was significantly cheaper than the Pullman Mercedes with 40 hp for 6550 RM. Adjusted for purchasing power, these prices correspond to around 22,000 or 29,000 euros in today's currency.
