The Mercedes-Benz GLK (internal designation: X 204 ) is a compact SUV from the German automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz . It is based on the platform of the C-Class (204 series) and has been available on the European market since October 2008; in America the GLK was offered since January 2009. Two near-series studies were exhibited at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2008 . The production version was shown on April 20, 2008 at the Beijing Auto Show.

Until November 2011, the only production location was the Bremen plant . Since December 2011 the GLK has also been produced in Beijing. According to Mercedes-Benz , GLK stands for luxury compact class SUV . The starting price for the introduction was 40,341 euros, over time the starting price could be reduced to 35,462 euros with the offer of weaker motorized models. The basic price was increased to 36,235 euros for the model upgrade.

In the summer of 2012, after four years of production , the X 204 series underwent a model upgrade; the market launch took place on June 30th.

Production ended in June 2015. A total of 540,089 vehicles were produced.

The second generation, introduced in summer 2015, is marketed under the name GLC .

Development and testing phase

The Mercedes developers tested the Mercedes-Benz GLK over around 4.5 million test kilometers; among others in Namibia . In addition, detailed simulation programs were carried out as part of the digital prototype. The experts tested around 1,000 different versions of the GLK and carried out around 200,000 driving maneuvers.

Vision GLK FREESIDE and Vision GLK TOWNSIDE

At the North American International Auto Show 2008 in Detroit, two GLK studies were presented for the first time. These were already almost ready for series production as Vision GLK FREESIDE and Vision GLK TOWNSIDE and the design was then completely incorporated into the series model, apart from a few minor details. Both versions have short overhangs at both the front and rear (front: 816 mm; rear: 957 mm) and an upright front (50 degrees). The A-pillar is kept narrow and thus contributes to good all-round visibility. Like the front, the windshield is also quite steep. In addition, the Vision FREESIDE offers a large ground clearance (201 mm) and the approach angles (front: 23 degrees; rear: 25 degrees) are also large. The FREESIDE study also has gray side skirts, which are wider than the car and make it appear brawny. The GLK TOWNSIDE has less ground clearance and looks more like an SUV for the city than for the terrain. The latter also does not have the gray side skirts found on the GLK FREESIDE . Both studies have 20-inch alloy wheels. A newly developed 2.1-liter four-cylinder of the new four-cylinder diesel generation ( OM 651 ) with an output of 125 kW (170 hp), a two-stage turbocharger and common rail direct injection is used as the engine for both visions . Thanks to urea injection ( AdBlue ), which Mercedes calls BlueTEC , it meets the Euro 6 emissions standard .

The GLK has ASR , ABS , BAS , ESP , 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic transmission , 4ETS (electronic traction system), crash-active headrests and a knee airbag for the driver as well as AGILITY CONTROL suspension with a selective damper system. This system automatically adapts the shock absorbers to the current road conditions. There is also the AGILITY CONTROL steering system with a safety steering column that is height and length adjustable. Except for the rear -wheel drive models GLK 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY , all models have the 7-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC all - wheel drive as standard . The 2-zone automatic climate control THERMATIC is also standard. There is also the Audio 20 CD radio with a double tuner and MP3-compatible CD player. The color display is 5 inches. It also has a Bluetooth interface with hands-free function, an aux-in connection (in the glove compartment; from autumn 2011 in the center console), a telephone keypad and six loudspeakers. Special equipment

In the GLK , the equipment lines familiar from the other models are replaced by “packages”. To introduce the GLK , a package for the exterior design ( off-road styling package or exterior sports package ) had to be ordered; the basic model was only available when the GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY was delivered.

Additional equipment includes the first-generation PRE-SAFE safety system , an electronically controlled hill descent aid , a chassis lowered by 20 mm, the ILS ( Intelligent Light System , with LED daytime running lights since December 2009) and 19 and 20-inch wide tires. The keyless go locking system is also available on request. It is also possible to choose between two radio navigation systems. The Audio 50 APS is equipped with a CD / DVD drive as well as a telephone keypad and navigates exclusively using arrow navigation. A map display as with the COMAND APS multimedia system is not possible here. The information from COMAND APS , which includes voice control ( LINGUATRONIC ) as standard, is shown on a 7-inch color display. Packages and special models

Off-road styling package (2008–2012) and off-road technology package

The off-road styling package , which was omitted with the 2012 facelift, visually transforms the GLK into an off-road vehicle; this is underpinned all around by the plastic planking. Underbody and underbody protection are also included in this package. The roof rails are kept in plain black and thus adapts to the planking. This model also has a two-louvred radiator grille and 17-inch alloy wheels as standard.
The off-road technology package completes the off-road capabilities on the technical side. Engines and technical data

The engines and all-wheel drive originated with small changes from the then current C-Class as a 4MATIC model. A rear-wheel drive model has also been available since summer 2009. However, the GLK 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY remained the only model in which the drive type could be selected by customers. The GLK 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY had been on the market since mid-December 2009 . In contrast to the C- and E-Class , where this engine was only available in conjunction with the 5G-Tronic until the end of 2010 , the more modern 7G-Tronic was offered here. In September 2010, the engine range was rounded off downwards with the GLK 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with 143 hp. Terrain characteristics

Although designed for urban traffic, the GLK also offers a certain off-road capability. The ground clearance is 201 millimeters. The facelift of the Mercedes-Benz GLK was presented at the New York International Auto Show in March 2012 . The market launch took place on June 30th.

Many security systems have found their way into the model update. Including the adaptive cruise control Distronic Plus , an active blind spot assistant and a lane departure warning .
