Mercedes-Benz OM 642
OM 642
Manufacturer: Mercedes Benz
Production period: since 2005
Working principle: diesel
Design: Six-cylinder V-engine
Engines: 3.0 liters (2987 cm³)
Previous model: OM 648
Successor: OM 656

The OM 642 engine built in Berlin and Untertürkheim is a diesel engine type with six cylinders in a V arrangement , common rail direct injection and exhaust gas turbocharger , developed and produced by Daimler for use primarily in Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The engine has a cylinder bank angle of 72 degrees, which is atypical for V6 engines.

These engines have been installed in all series of passenger cars , SUVs and vans from Mercedes since March 2005 and are (as of 2018) in the current Mercedes-Benz production program.

The abbreviation "OM" stands for "Oel-Motor" (engine that is operated with light oil / diesel) and has been used since the beginning (1920s) until today to describe the diesel engines of Daimler AG .

history

In March 2005, the OM 642 was used for the first time in the Mercedes model C 320 CDI of the C-Class 203 series . From July 2005, the new V engines were also installed in the E 280 CDI and E 320 CDI models of the 211 series E-Class . The engine is a more modern design compared to the previous five- and six-cylinder in-line engines OM 647 and OM 648 .

The newer, powerful CDI engines in the types E 280 CDI (with the same name as the predecessor with the throttled OM 648) and E 320 CDI (with the same name as the predecessor with the OM 648) are now V6-cylinders. Their advantages are higher torque , higher performance , better exhaust gas values and lower production costs . In addition, thanks to the shorter overall length, they now also fit in the C-Class and ML.

With the appearance of the new OM 651 , the 280 CDI in many series was replaced in the medium term by the new 150 kW four-cylinder, which not only has a higher output but also a lower fuel consumption. At the beginning of 2010, however, a 300 CDI with reduced output was presented in the E-Class , analogous to the 250 CDI . With 150 kW and 500 Nm, its output is on par with the four-cylinder ( OM 651 ).

In autumn 2010, the S-Class , the R-Class and the current E-models received a more powerful version of the diesel engine called the OM 642 LS. It has an output of 170 to 195 kW and 540 to 620 Nm. The new 300 CDI now achieves the performance level of the previous 350 CDI (without LS), the previous 300 CDI with 150 kW is no longer available.

Prototypes

In 2005 there was a test with an OM 642 equipped with three turbochargers in the SLK 320 CDI Triturbo show car . There it developed 210 kW and 630 Nm. In the course of their development, the V6 engines advanced into areas of the previous V8 diesel OM 629 . In the context of the CO 2 savings that are mandatory for manufacturers in the EU legislation, there is a trend towards " downsizing ", replacing large naturally aspirated engines with highly charged, lighter and fuel-saving engines with smaller displacements and smaller numbers of cylinders.

Construction kit production

The motors are created in a consistently used modular system. All engines are manufactured in the Berlin-Marienfelde production facility on an assembly line from ThyssenKrupp Krause GmbH. The eight-cylinder CDI OM 629 is built on the same basis .

Recalls to engine control software

For vehicles with the OM 642 there are also recalls by the manufacturer and "voluntary service campaigns" that address the shutdown devices in the engine control software. The ADAC states on its side:

  • E 350 BlueTEC, E 350 d (Coupe, C207 only): 02.2013 to 12.2016
  • G 350d (possibly also G 350 BlueTEC): 09.2015 to 12.2015

Use and performance differentiation of the OM 642

As with the four-cylinder engines in the C- and E-Class (180 CDI / 200 CDI / 220 CDI / 250 CDI), all type designations (280, 300, 320 and 350) refer to the V6 with an identical displacement of 3.0 liters . Except for the E 300 CDI model, the engine designation does not match the actual cubic capacity. The most powerful version of the engine currently has an output of 195 kW (265 hp).

The same-displacement versions with different outputs Type OM 642 DE 30 LA red. with 140  kW and type OM 642 DE 30 LA with 165 kW / 173 kW differ in terms of their engine peripherals, turbocharger , common rail injection system and engine controls, as well as the piston versions with different thermal conductivity that are installed in the series. If spare parts are required, only the most powerful piston version is available.

 * Engine designation is encoded as follows: OM = oil engine (diesel), series = 3 digits, DE = direct injection, displacement = deciliters (rounded), A = exhaust gas turbocharger, L = charge air cooling, red. = reduced output, LS = increased output

In addition, the engine was used in some Chrysler vehicles with slight modifications, e.g. B. in the Chrysler 300C 3.0 CRD or in the Jeep Grand Cherokee .
