The Mercedes-Benz R 171 is a roadster from the automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz . The convertible is the second generation of the SLK series and the successor to the Mercedes-Benz R 170 . The R 171 was built at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen . The vehicle was presented for the first time at the 74th Geneva Motor Show . Sales started in Europe on March 27, 2004, on March 26, 2011 it was replaced by the third generation. By the end of 2009, over 220,000 vehicles had been delivered to customers.

Changes compared to the previous model

The electro-hydraulic roof mechanism has been modified slightly compared to its predecessor. In the new model, the rear window rotates in its frame so that its curvature points upwards when folded. This made it possible to enlarge the trunk in convertible mode. New in the SLK and for the first time in a convertible from Mercedes-Benz was the optional Airscarf neck-level heating . It transports heated air upwards through ducts in the seat and in the headrest and directs a warm jet onto the neck of the driver and front passenger. The temperature can be regulated in three stages and the blower output automatically adapts to the speed.

The striking front is based on the super sports car Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren from McLaren-Mercedes and has led to the nickname "Coati".

Engines

The engines include a four-cylinder (engine designation M 271 ), two six-cylinder ( M 272 ) and an eight-cylinder ( M 113 ). The four-cylinder engine was available from the start of the series. The engine has a displacement of 1.8 liters and is supplied with charge air by means of a compressor . The new generation of six- cylinder engines made their debut in the SLK 350 , internally referred to as M 272 , which again have four valves per cylinder. In mid-2005, the three-liter version of the new generation was added to the SLK 280 . The top position is taken by the AMG model, with a 5.5-liter naturally aspirated engine that produces 265 kW (360 hp). The SLK 55 AMG Black Series is even more powerful . With 294 kW (400 PS) and a fixed CFRP roof, instead of a vario folding roof , it was positioned as a competitor to the BMW Z4 M Coupé .

A diesel engine was not offered for the SLK R 171. However, in 2005 Mercedes-Benz showed a study called the SLK 320 Triturbo . The then new OM 642 diesel engine was used in the vehicle, which had the design of the SLK 55 AMG, and the output was increased to 210 kW (286 hp) with three turbochargers and the maximum torque was 630 Nm. With an average consumption of 7.5 l per 100 km, the car would have reached 100 km / h in 5.3 seconds. The maximum speed is said to have been regulated at 250 km / h. However, it stayed with the single piece.

transmission

The four- and six-cylinder models are shifted with a six-speed manual transmission as standard. Automatic transmissions are available on request. These have five gears in the four-cylinder and seven gears in the six-cylinder. The seven-speed automatic 7G-Tronic is built into the eight-cylinder engine as standard. For vehicles with automatic transmissions, shift buttons were available on the steering wheel, which increase shift comfort, especially when driving in a sporty manner.

Facelift

In December 2007 the facelift of the SLK was presented. Delivery began in April 2008. The new model received a new front apron, which should appear more dynamic, as well as larger, trapezoidal exhaust pipes, diffuser optics and darker lights at the rear. The engines have been adapted to the new generation of engines. As a result, the SLK 200 Kompressor now developed 135 kW (184 hp) instead of 120 kW (163 hp). This revised engine was already known from the C, E and CLK classes. The SLK 350 (Sport) was the first to receive the new sport engine with 224 kW (305 PS) (predecessor: 200 kW / 272 PS); all engines were more economical according to Mercedes-Benz. Prices started at € 36,503.25 (as of December 2007). In some markets (e.g. the USA) the SLK 280 has been delivered as the SLK 300 since the facelift. From March 2009 the latter was also sold in Germany as the SLK 300.
