The M 271 is a four- cylinder in-line petrol engine from Mercedes-Benz , which was introduced in 2002 as the successor to the M 111 .

It is manufactured in the Mercedes-Benz plant in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim . The engine has been offered in various Mercedes car models since 2002. It all started with the C-Class 203 series . It is now also offered in the SLK , CLK and the E-Class . It is also used in the Sprinter (W 906) .

The engine series presented in 2002 showed a noticeable improvement in many properties compared to its predecessor M 111 . These include lower fuel consumption, improved smoothness, improved power and torque characteristics and a stronger focus on lightweight construction. A package of measures called TWINPULSE , consisting of four-valve technology with centrally located spark plugs, variably adjustable camshafts , balancer shafts, adaptive drive dynamics and supercharging with charge air cooling, should enable smooth running and driving pleasure with low fuel consumption at the same time.

The engine weighs 167 kg, that is 18 kg less than the M 111. The weight savings was mm by a cylinder distance of only 90, a die-cast aluminum engine block with cast-in cast iron - cylinder liners and made of a high strength aluminum alloy cylinder head reached.

To improve the running smoothness, the engine has a Lanchester compensation , which eliminates the free inertia forces of the second order. This compensation does not apply to the 1.6-liter variant in order to save friction. The balance shafts are mounted in an aluminum housing that is screwed to the crankcase from below in the oil pan. The counter-rotating balance shafts are driven by a single sleeve chain with low masses. The engine's oil pump is also housed in the crankcase; it is driven by one of the two shafts using a pair of gears.

Two camshafts driven by a single roller chain operate the valves via roller rocker arms. The valves themselves have a maintenance-free hydraulic valve clearance compensation. The phase of the intake and exhaust camshafts can be continuously adjusted independently. For this purpose, a newly developed vane-type adjuster with an integrated control valve enables the most favorable control times to be set continuously, which has a favorable effect on the torque behavior at full load, on fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

In contrast to their predecessor, all engines in the M-271 series are supercharged using a compressor . Compared to the supercharged M-111 engines, the compressor has been completely redeveloped with the aim of improving air throughput and efficiency. The air gap between the rotors and the charger housing was reduced and the rotors were given a new type of coating. To reduce noise emissions, broadband noise dampers were installed on both the suction and pressure side. The charge air is brought to the optimum temperature by a charge air cooler .

The motor control is calculated by the Siemens SIM 4 LKE. The adaptive drive dynamics monitors pedal movements and registers acceleration maneuvers. In this way, the system is able to recognize whether the driver has a more comfort-oriented or a sporty driving style and adapts the characteristics of the accelerator pedal and throttle valve.

According to the so-called "downsizing concept", the engine delivers the required power with a small displacement and high boost pressure. This makes the engine smaller and lighter, and at partial load, the smaller displacement means that throttle losses are lower. Although the compression has to be reduced with increasing boost pressure in order to avoid knocking at full load, this disadvantage is compensated for by the better cylinder filling.

Until 2008, all versions had 82 mm bore and 85 mm stroke and thus a displacement of 1796 cm³. From April 2008 to April 2010, the C 180 compressor will be available as the first BlueEFFICIENCY model. This has an M 271 with a displacement reduced to 1.6 liters. For this purpose, the stroke was reduced from 82 mm to 75.6 mm with the same bore. The smaller displacement, in conjunction with the needs-based control of the servo pump, the longer rear axle ratio, tires with low rolling resistance and other fuel-saving measures on the vehicle, such as B. aerodynamic improvements or weight-reduced components for lower fuel consumption.

The engine variant without direct injection can be operated with Super E10 (RON 95).

M 271 with direct injection

Already announced when the M 271 was presented, the market launch of the M 271 with direct injection was postponed to mid-2003 due to technical problems. Initially offered as the C 200 CGI in the ( C-Class ), the M 271 DE 18 ML was also used in the CLK 200 CGI ( C / A209 ).

In this engine, the fuel is injected into the cylinders via an injector at an angle of 42 degrees and at a pressure of 50 to 120 bar (depending on the operating state), where the fuel forms a mixture cloud with the air. This is guided to the spark plugs by specially shaped piston recesses. The CGI engine has two separate intake ducts, one of which is additionally equipped with an adjustable swirl flap. In this way, turbulence is created in the air that is drawn in, which makes the combustion process more efficient. The injection pressure is generated by a high-pressure fuel pump. This is driven by the intake camshaft.

In contrast to the other M-271 motors, the Siemens SIM 4 LDE motor control works here , which has been expanded to include specific functions, such as regulating the pressure in the fuel line. In partial load operation, at a mean pressure of four to five bar, and at low engine speeds, direct injection works using the stratified charge process . The fuel is injected relatively late into the air compressed by the piston. This creates an ignitable mixture in the area of ​​the spark plug, while a lean mixture that is difficult to ignite exists in the rest of the combustion chamber. Outside this range, the direct injection engine is operated with the air-fuel mixture (lambda 1) that is usual for catalytic converter engines. The nitrogen oxides produced in lean operation are filtered by a NO x storage catalytic converter.

The prescribed fuel type is Super Plus E5 (98 RON); Refueling with Super E10 (RON 95) or Normal E10 (RON 91) is not possible, even in exceptional cases, as the model may not be operated with a bioethanol admixture of more than 5 percent.

During the entire construction period, the direct injection engine was only available with the 6-speed manual transmission . In 2005 the engine was withdrawn from the sales program.

M 271 EVO

After seven years of construction and over a million units of the M 271 series produced, the M 271 EVO (EVO = Evolution) was launched in the E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY in September 2009 . This represents a further development of the well-known supercharged engine with direct injection and replaces the M 271 in some vehicles.

The newly designed variant received an exhaust gas turbocharger instead of the compressor . In addition to the lower production costs, this has the advantage that the motor does not have to generate any additional power to drive the compressor. This improves the efficiency of the engine. In addition, the turbocharger, which is welded to the exhaust manifold, is more compact, weighs around four kilograms less and scores better than the compressor with its better noise and vibration properties. The charger has a wastegate and a recirculation valve to regulate the pressure ratios .

A warm-up control interrupts the coolant flow when the engine is cold, which means that the engine oil warms up more quickly and thus shortens the warm-up phase. The oil pump received a needs-based control.

The direct injection has been further developed and equipped with magnetic multi-hole injectors that inject the fuel at an angle of 30 degrees. The engine now works in the homogeneous air-fuel mixture of 14.6: 1 (lambda = 1) and dispenses with stratified charge.

Until mid-2010, the M-271 EVO engines were only available in conjunction with the automatic 5-speed gearbox . Since then, the 180/200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY models can also be ordered with the 6-speed manual transmission. The manually operated models have the ECO start / stop function. With this function, the engine is automatically switched off as soon as the vehicle coasts to a traffic light, as soon as the vehicle rolls slower than 8 km / h, the brake is applied and idling is engaged. If the driver presses the accelerator pedal or the clutch pedal, the engine starts automatically immediately. In mid-2011 the 5-speed automatic was replaced by a 7-speed automatic (designation 7G-TRONIC), which has also been equipped with a start-stop function since September 2011 (designation 7G-TRONIC-PLUS).
