The Mercedes-Benz R 170 is a two-seater roadster from Mercedes-Benz from the SLK series , which was produced from autumn 1996 to early 2004. It was the first convertible in a long time to be fitted with a fixed, folding steel roof. This folding steel roof , also called retractable hardtop or vario roof , disappears completely and automatically in the trunk of the vehicle.

Since it is made of steel, it combines the advantages of a hard top and the flexibility of a folding top. This makes the SLK both a roadster and a coupé . In the R 170 model series, the vario roof folds out of the trunk within 25 seconds. This reduces the luggage space with the roof open from 348 to 145 liters. The manufacturer of the hardtop is the company Car Top Systems .

A total of 311,222 units of the R 170 were built, making it the best-selling roadster in Germany ahead of the Mazda MX-5 .

The roadster is technically based on the C-Class ( 202 series ) and has a longitudinally installed in- line or V-engine and rear-wheel drive. The chassis includes independent suspension of the front wheels with double wishbones and coil springs, the rear wheels with five separate arms , hydraulically operated disc brakes on all wheels and rack and pinion steering . The self-supporting body is made of sheet steel.

The vehicle underwent a facelift in February 2000 . Mercedes-Benz changed the appearance and offered other new engines. The smallest engine with a displacement of two liters was upgraded with a compressor . For the first time, a six-cylinder was also available in the SLK series. The engine of the SLK 320 corresponds to the 3.2-liter six-cylinder V-engine known from other series with three valves per cylinder and double ignition. For the first time, it was possible to choose this motor with a manual gearbox. The automatic transmission was standard in all other series . The most powerful SLK is the SLK 32 AMG with 260 kW (354 hp).

With the model update ("Mopf"), the electronic stability program and the manually shifted six-speed gearbox were introduced as standard in all models. Higher quality materials were used for the interior. Externally, the facelifted SLK can be recognized by new sills and aprons as well as by the indicators in the mirror housing.

In spring 2004 it was replaced by the Mercedes-Benz R 171 . Based on the R 170, the Chrysler Crossfire was produced until the end of 2007 .
