The Mercedes-AMG GmbH , also just AMG called, is a subsidiary of Daimler AG and responsible for the high-performance cars of the Group. The headquarters of Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach is approx. 20 km from the Daimler headquarters in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim .
Hans Werner A Ufrecht and Erhard M hich founded the company AMG on 1 June 1967. The third letter of the company name stands for G roßaspach , the original headquarters at the birthplace of Aufrecht. Together with Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG develops complete vehicle concepts in the high-performance area and is a Mercedes-Benz Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is the first vehicle that was brought onto the market completely in Affalterbach in 2010 after a 36-month development period. On September 9, 2014, the second in-house development from Affalterbach was presented under the name Mercedes-AMG GT . This replaces its predecessor, the SLS AMG.
In Affalterbach, the most powerful engines in the series from Mercedes-Benz are also developed and assembled by hand in the engine factory - each engine by a single mechanic according to the "one man - one engine" principle. In the last step, the badge with the signature of the mechanic is attached. The engines are delivered to the respective Mercedes-Benz factories such as Sindelfingen or Bremen, where they are installed in the AMG vehicles.
Exclusive special requests that cannot be carried out ex works are implemented in the AMG Performance Studio in compliance with the quality and safety standards of Mercedes-Benz and in accordance with the legislative requirements.
history
Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher founded the AMG company in 1967. The first major sporting success came in 1971 at the Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race with class victory and second place in the overall standings for the AMG Mercedes 300 SEL 6.3. In 1976 the company moved to Affalterbach . After a cooperation agreement was signed with Mercedes-Benz in 1990, the first joint vehicle development project, the C 36 AMG , was implemented in 1993 . In 1998 Daimler AG took over 51% of the shares from Hans Werner Aufrecht, and the company was renamed Mercedes-AMG GmbH . The company headquarters remained in Affalterbach. Mercedes-AMG GmbH has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler AG since January 2005. AMG became a Mercedes-Benz Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) in the area of complete vehicle and engine development, is integrated into the process of vehicle development at Mercedes-Benz and develops its own Mercedes-Benz complete vehicle concepts in the high-performance area.
In 2010, after 36 months of development, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was presented; From 2011, the racing version of the gullwing developed jointly with HWA AG according to the Group GT3 regulations was used as the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 . At the end of 2011, Mercedes-AMG announced a collaboration with the Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati . Ducati presented the Diavel AMG Special Edition at the IAA in Frankfurt in September 2011 . This project ended with the acquisition of Ducati by Audi in April 2012.
In July 2014 negotiations between Mercedes-AMG and the Italian motorcycle manufacturer MV Agusta became known. At the end of October 2014, the companies signed a cooperation agreement according to which Mercedes-AMG will take over 25 percent of MV Agusta.
As of August 1st, 2020, long-standing managing director Tobias Moers will be joining Aston Martin as CEO . His successor will be Philipp Schiemer, who was previously CEO of Mercedes-Benz do Brasil Ltda.

AMG in motorsport
From the late 1960s to the early 1970s, AMG used the large Mercedes sedan 300 SEL 6.3 in touring car racing. This spectacular car, with over 295 kW from a V8 engine bored out to 6.8 liters, achieved some notable successes, but had problems with the tires due to its high weight. Participation in races in the late 1970s took place with the Coupé 450 SLC 5.0 based on the Mercedes-Benz C 107 .
After the introduction of the sporty Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.3-16 with 4-valve technology, AMG, among others, used it in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) . The plant supported the nearby team from 1988 (in addition to Peter Sauber's sports cars ), so that AMG received the status of a works team or was later taken over entirely. Klaus Ludwig won the DTM title in 1992 and 1994, and Bernd Schneider in 1995 . In addition, in the same year it won the title in the newly created and parallel ITC , which was held with the same vehicles in other European countries.
In 1996 only one championship under the name ITC was held at home and abroad. After its end at the end of the same year (due to the withdrawal of the competition from Opel and Alfa Romeo for cost reasons), the FIA allowed entry into the GT1 World Championship for 1997 with the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR , which was developed over the winter in a short time , although still none of the mandatory 25 road vehicles were available. The uncompromisingly developed V12 racing car promptly won the 1997 World Championship against competition from Porsche and private McLaren - BMW, among others . In 1998 the evolution stage CLK LM with V8 engine was introduced, which was eliminated at Le Mans with oil pump problems, but otherwise dominated the GT World Championship against the Porsche 911 GT1-98, which was also further developed . Since the private GT1 competition had no chance and withdrew, this series also ended for lack of opponents. The first CLK-GTR road vehicles have only just been delivered.
After AMG was incorporated into the DaimlerChrysler Group, Hans-Werner Aufrecht founded HWA GmbH (now HWA AG) in 1998 , which carries out racing for Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG.
In Formula 1 , too , AMG vehicles are used as auxiliary vehicles outside of the actual racing event. Examples of this are the medical car and the safety car , for which the Mercedes-AMG C63 T-model and the AMG GT R were used in the 2019 season. A modified SLS AMG was used as a safety car from 2010 to 2014. Since the year 2012, the Mercedes works team competes in Formula 1 under the name " Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team " and was on 14 and 15 April 2012 at the Chinese Grand Prix by Nico Rosberg the first pole position and celebrate the first victory. Between 2014 and 2018, five drivers 'and five constructors' world championships were won in Formula 1 and several records were set. See also: Formula 1 statistics

particularities
AMG has been producing one of the world's most powerful roadsters in a small series since 2004 , the SL 65 AMG based on the Mercedes-Benz R 230 . The V12 biturbo engine used there with a displacement of six liters and 450 kW (612 hp), which is also installed in the Maybach , is also offered in other AMG models. The torque of this engine is 1200 Nm, but is limited to a maximum of 1000 Nm by the engine control unit in order not to overload the transmission and other components in the drive train. The maximum torque is already available at revs from 2000 min −1 , which enables a confident driving behavior, as there is always enough power without a large increase in speed.
The V12 biturbo engine block is also used in the S-Class sedan, the G-Class and the CL Coupé. The performance is the same for all series with this engine. Only for the special series SL 65 AMG Black Series (a series limited to 350 units) was the output increased to 493 kW (670 hp).
The V8 supercharged engine is supplied for the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren , but here with up to 650 hp.
Current models
Many different gasoline engines are currently installed in AMG vehicles. A diesel engine is not currently being built, but was already part of the model range. Contrary to popular belief, the technically effective numerical designations of the engine series no longer have a specific connection with the displacement: the 45 engine has a displacement of only 2 liters, while the 63 engine is now in the newest variant after versions with 6.2 and later 5.5 only has 4 liters of displacement.

GT
The Mercedes-AMG GT is a vehicle developed independently by Mercedes-AMG and the successor to the SLS AMG . It is operated in all variants by the 4.0-liter V8 M 178 .
Project One
The Mercedes-AMG Project One is a two-seat sports car , the drive unit from the 1-formula - racing car Mercedes W07 F1 hybrid derived. The vehicle was presented to the public for the first time in September 2017 at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main . The first vehicles are to be delivered to customers in 2019.
Former models
- 30 CDI
The first and so far only diesel engine from AMG was the 30 CDI . It is based on the inline five-cylinder, which had a displacement of 2.7 liters in the production version. The displacement of the AMG counterpart was increased to 3.0 liters by using a different crankshaft, and the common rail injection, turbocharger and charge air cooling were optimized. The engine was offered from 2003 to 2004 in all variants of the C-Class (sedan, T-model and sports coupé) and developed 170 kW (231 hp).
- 3.2
Installed in the 190 (W 201); first AMG that could be obtained directly from Mercedes. Two-valve in-line six-cylinder with 172 kW (234 hp) and 305 Nm.
- 32
The 3.2-liter V6 supercharged engine appeared as a smaller supercharged variant of the 55 AMG supercharged engine. It was offered in all variants of the C-Class (sedan, T-model and sports coupé - W / S / CL 203) as well as in the SLK (R 170) and developed a uniform 260 kW (354 hp). Its maximum torque is 450 Nm. The engine was also installed in a one-off production of the A-Class (AMG A 32 Kompressor) in 2002, for which the dashboard and seats had to be moved seven centimeters to the rear.
- 3.4
The engine was installed in the A 124, C 124, S 124 and W 124 as 300 E-24 3.4 AMG and 300 CE-24 3.4 AMG . The 3.3-liter engine has 3314 cm³, is based on the M 104 and has an engine output of 200 kW (272 hp), a maximum torque of 330 Nm or an output of 252 hp in the convertible.
- 36
The first top model in the C-Class was called the C 36 AMG from 1993 to 1997. The engine is a straight six cylinder with 3606 cm³ and an engine output of 206 kW (280 PS) and 385 Nm. It is based on the M-104 engine . The C 36 AMG was only available as a sedan.
In addition, the engine was also used in the E-Class of the 124 series in all variants except the sedan, and later on request in the 210 series. These vehicles were sold as tuning vehicles, but as E 36 AMGs through the regular dealer network . These engines produce between 195 and 206 kW.
- 43
As the successor to the C 36 AMG, AMG presented the 4266 cm³ V8 engine with an output of 225 kW (306 hp) and 410 Nm torque in the C 43 AMG in September 1997. This is a more powerful version of the M 113 E 43 . The C 43 AMG was both as a sedan and as a model T (combi) was prepared.
- 50/60
This is a more powerful version of the M 119 E 50 , it was sold as the E 50 AMG ( W / S 210 ) with unchanged displacement of 4973 cm³ (255 kW / 347 PS; 480 Nm), and as the E 60 AMG ( W 124 & W / S 210) and SL 60 AMG ( R 129 ) with 5956 cm³ (280 kW / 381 PS; 580 Nm) were sold. Only the E 50 AMG was marketed as a Mercedes-Benz vehicle, the other versions were available as tuning derivatives of their respective basic models (E 50 AMG, E 500 or SL 500) from Mercedes-Benz dealers.
- 55
Two different engines were offered under the designation 55, depending on the model: the M 152 and the M 113 E 55 ML. The M 113 V8 engine has a displacement of 5.4 liters and was recently only offered with a compressor ( G 55 AMG ) . Until the beginning of 2011, the engine was also sold without a compressor ( SLK 55 AMG ) . The 55 series was previously the standard machine and was offered for all AMG series, but has since been replaced. The power spectrum ranged from 255 kW (347 hp) in the C 55 AMG ( W / S 202 ) to 380 kW (517 hp) in the SL 55 AMG . A modified version of this supercharged engine, the M 155 , powered the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren (up to 500 kW / 680 PS). The only model that was still equipped with the M 113 engine up to 2012 was the G 55 AMG .
- 63
The 63 AMG was the last expansion stage of the 12-cylinder naturally aspirated engine ( M 137 ) from the S 600 L. By expanding the displacement from 5.8 to 6.2 liters and making further modifications, the output could be increased to 326 kW (444 hp). The model name is also a reference to the legendary 300 SEL 6.3 from 1968, the first tuning object from AMG. This twelve-cylinder was offered in the CL and S-Class and as the first series-produced off-road vehicle with twelve-cylinder in the G-Class .
