The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren (199 series) is a super sports car developed by Mercedes-Benz and McLaren . It was produced from 2003 to 2009 by McLaren in Portsmouth, England (bodyshell) and Woking (assembly).

Based on the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé of the 1950s , the car was equipped with butterfly doors and characteristic ventilation openings on the sides and on the bonnet. Production was limited to 3500 copies, of which a total of 2157 copies were delivered. In 2010 there were 46 new registrations in Germany.

Engine / gear

The SLR has a supercharged V8 engine with a displacement of 5.439 liters, which develops 460 kW (626 hp) at 6500 revolutions per minute. It generates the maximum torque of 780 Nm at 3250 rpm. For better weight distribution and for better handling, the engine is installed behind the front axle ( front mid-engine ). The super sports car accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 334 km / h.

Brake discs made of carbon ceramic decelerate the vehicle without fading . The power is transmitted by an automatic five-speed gearbox .

The SLR has an exhaust system with tailpipes attached to the side behind the front axle (so-called side pipes ). This system had to be specially approved, as sidepipes are normally not permitted in Europe for security reasons.

The engine was manufactured by the Mercedes-Benz subsidiary Mercedes-AMG .

With Brabus tuning, the SLR develops 486 kW (661 hp) at 6500 rpm. Its top speed increases to 340 km / h and the acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h is 3.6 seconds. With the racing exhaust system, however, the Brabus version is not approved for road traffic in Germany.

body

The body is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and some details are modeled on a Formula 1 car. It has a cage, the so-called "spider". The only part of the body that is not made of CFRP is the aluminum engine mount.

The electronically adjustable rear spoiler can generate additional contact pressure on the rear axle at high speeds and also act as an air brake .

After a possible accident, the car has to go to Woking , England , to be measured there.

Special model SLR 722

The special model was available from July 11, 2006, the engine developed 478 kW (650 hp) and needed 0.2 seconds less for the standard sprint than the regular SLR. The top speed is three km / h higher than this one and therefore 337 km / h. In addition to the engine, the front apron, brake system (from the Italian manufacturer Brembo with ceramic brake discs), chassis (including lowering), 19-inch wheels and rear diffuser have been modified.

The SLR 722 Edition is intended to commemorate the victory of British racing legend Stirling Moss and his co-driver Dennis Jenkinson on the Italian long-distance classic Mille Miglia . The starting number of the 300 SLR was 722, which was awarded after the start time at 07:22. In 1955 they drove the 1000 mile route in a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR in 10 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds. This corresponded to an average of 157.65 km / h on a public road.

A roadster version of the 722 was later launched ( Roadster 722 S ). The 722 Edition and the Roadster 722 S were each made 150 copies.

Changes

A total of around 300 parts were changed on the car. This resulted in an increase in output of 18 kW (25 PS) and 40 Nm compared to the normal SLR. Lighter oil tanks, insulation materials, a damper housing made of aluminum and components made of CFRP in the footwell and on the rear wheel arches have also reduced the weight by 44 kg. The price is more than € 20,000 above a regular SLR.

The vehicle, which is limited to 150 copies, has been significantly revised, including the chassis. It is equipped with 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels that make the car 18 kg lighter. In addition, the 722 Edition is 10 mm lower above the road. As a result, the chassis is tighter, which allows higher cornering speeds. With the lowering, the rolling motion of the car was also reduced by 20 percent.

The carbon fiber-reinforced ceramic brake discs made by the Italian manufacturer Brembo allow better deceleration values. In addition, the front brake discs have grown to a diameter of 390 mm. Due to the new brake configuration, a new type of ESP control was also installed.

The new, visibly modified body contains CFRP elements, which lighten the vehicle by 26 kg. In 100 hours of detailed work in the wind tunnel, the downforce was increased and the flow resistance decreased. The front spoiler edge, small air deflectors in front of the rear wheels and a steeper angle of attack of the rear spoiler increase the downforce by around a third. The clear lacquered front spoiler edge made of CFRP improves aerodynamics and increases downforce on the front axle by 128 percent. Small wheel spoilers made of CFRP reduce the air turbulence on the rear axle. The downforce was improved to 122 kg. In the high-downforce position of the so-called airbrake at 35 °, the total downforce increases by a further 50 kg. The result is even more precise driving behavior and turning at high speeds.

The 722 Edition also has individually preselectable transmission programs such as M ( manual ), S ( sport ) and C ( comfort ). New shift paddles behind the steering wheel accelerate gear changes.

In the interior, the sports bucket seats are now covered with semi- aniline leather . This leather continues to appear in combination with Alcantara . Also noticeable is the easy-to-grip racing steering wheel with the gearshift paddles, as well as black CFRP applications that are supposed to convey the flair of motorsport.

The 722 Edition will only be presented to selected guests on the racetrack in Le Castellet in the south of France . The reason for this is the newly founded, worldwide SLR Club , which offers well-heeled customers many events and special driver training courses. Among the instructors are, among others, the former Formula 1 Car Driver David Coulthard and Jochen Mass and the Seat Leon Supercopa driver and DTM presenter Christina Surer .

The last variant of the SLR was the SLR Stirling Moss in 2009. This has neither a roof (nor an emergency roof) nor a windshield. Only a cover for the passenger side was included. The design is based on the 300 SLR from 1955. The engine is identical to that from the 722 Edition. 75 copies were produced.
