The four-door variant (internal designation X 290 ), which has been on sale since September 2018, was presented at the Geneva Motor Show 2018.

After the  SLS AMG, it is the second vehicle developed independently by  AMG . Each engine is assembled by hand by an employee at the AMG plant in Affalterbach according to the motto "One man, one engine"  and documented with a corresponding badge with his engraved signature. marketing

Mercedes-AMG presented the GT on September 9, 2014 at AMG in Affalterbach , the first presentation at a trade fair took place at the Mondial de l'automobile de Paris 2014.

Mercedes-AMG showed the first pictures of the GT roadster on September 15, 2016, and this will also celebrate its public premiere at the Mondial de l'automobile de Paris.

The design of the sports car and its positioning on the market are seen as direct competition to the Porsche 911 .

“The breaches of territory began with Mercedes sports cars such as the SLR and SLS , as well as with the Porsche luxury model Panamera . Now Daimler is stepping up: Because the Mercedes-AMG GT that is now being presented is a clear challenge to the evergreen Porsche 911. "

The revised AMG GT and AMG GT S as well as the AMG GT C Edition 50, the closed version of the GT C Roadster, were presented at the Detroit Motor Show 2017. The occasion for Edition 50 was the 50th anniversary of AMG.

Since then, the entire AMG GT product range has been given a revised front, which is similar to that of the AMG GT C previously presented, as well as the AMG Panamericana radiator grille, derived from the AMG GT3 racing car. In addition, the AMG GT and AMG GT S now produce 350 kW and 384 kW, respectively. Also new is the AIRPANEL air control system from the AMG GT R and now available for all AMG GT models. Furthermore, the GT C and GT R models are equipped with all-wheel steering as standard , the GT S model received this as an optional equipment variant.
