Nico Erik Rosberg ([ ˈrɔsbɛɐ̯k ]; born June 27, 1985 in Wiesbaden ) is a former German - Finnish racing driver and investor . As the son of the Finnish Formula 1 world champion Keke Rosberg and a German, he holds both citizenships , but does not speak Finnish . He competed with a Finnish racing license until the end of 2003 and a German racing license from 2004 .
He won the GP2 series in 2005 and started in Formula 1 in 2006 . In 2012 he was the seventh driver with a German license to win a Grand Prix at a Formula 1 world championship run. From 2010 to 2016 he was under contract with Mercedes . In 2016 he became the third driver to compete with a German license and became Formula 1 world champion . A few days after winning his world championship, he announced that he would end his career in Formula 1.
Career
Beginnings in motorsport (1996-2002)
Nico Rosberg sat in a kart for the first time at the age of six . He began his motorsport career in karting in 1996 . He started with a Finnish racing license in various kart championships. In 2000 he became Vice European Champion in Formula A behind Lewis Hamilton . In 2000 and 2001 he took part in the World Championship in the Formula Super A category .
2001 was also Rosberg's debut in formula racing . He took part in three races of the Iberian Formula BMW Cup . In 2002 Rosberg switched completely to formula racing and competed for Team Rosberg , his father's racing team, in the German Formula BMW. He was documented and sponsored by the music channel VIVA . Therefore his team operated under the name VIVA Racing . Rosberg won nine out of twenty races and was champion with 264 points ahead of Maximilian Götz , who had 183 points. He clearly beat his teammate Christian Bakkerud , who was 15th with 37 points. In addition, Rosberg completed his first Formula 1 test for Williams in 2002 at the age of 17 .
Formula 3 (2003-2004)
In 2003 Rosberg switched to the newly founded Formula 3 Euro Series . He started again for the Rosberg team. The racing team used Opel engines . His teammate was Andreas Zuber . Having already stood on the podium twice, he scored his first win at the first race at Le Mans , which was also his only win that year. He was on the podium in two other races. In the championship he reached eighth place with 44 points. He clearly beat his teammate Zuber, who was 24th with two points. In the Rookie Cup , in which only drivers who had never driven in a Formula 3 championship before, Rosberg finished second behind Christian Klien . In addition, in 2003 Rosberg took part in three Formula 3 individual events. He played one for the Rosberg team and two for Carlin . He also took part in Formula 1 test drives for Williams again.
In 2004 Rosberg changed his racing license and from then on competed in the races as a German. First he won the winter series of the Spanish Formula 3 championship for the Rosberg team. He then completed the 2004 Formula 3 Euro Series season for the family racing team. Rosberg won the first two races at Hockenheim and one race at the Nürburgring . With a total of five podium finishes, he finished the season in fourth place overall. With 70 to 0 points, he clearly distanced his teammate Zuber. In addition, Rosberg took part in three Formula 3 individual events for the Rosberg team. He finished second behind Hamilton in the Bahrain Superprix . In addition to his Formula 3 races, he completed other Formula 1 tests for Williams.
GP2 series (2005)
In 2005 Rosberg switched to the newly founded GP2 series at ART Grand Prix . He became a team-mate of Alexandre Prémat , who had become runner-up in the Formula 3 Euro Series the year before. After two third places in the main races in Monte Carlo and on the Nürburgring , he achieved his first GP2 victory in the sprint race in Magny-Cours . At the following main races at Silverstone and Hockenheim , he won several times starting from pole position . Rosberg finally decided the championship with 120 to 105 points against Heikki Kovalainen . He had almost twice as many points as his team-mate. Prémat finished fourth overall with 67 points. Formula 1 (2006-2016)
Williams (2006-2009)
In 2006 Rosberg competed for Williams for the first time in Formula 1. He became a teammate of Mark Webber . The racing team used engines from Cosworth . In his first Formula 1 race in Bahrain , Rosberg started from twelfth place on the grid. After a collision on the first lap and a repair stop, he fell back to the bottom of the field. Rosberg started to catch up and finally crossed the finish line in seventh place. With that he already scored two points in his debut race. Rosberg also set the fastest race lap, making him the youngest driver to do so. At the age of 20 years, 8 months and 13 days, he replaced Fernando Alonso , who was 21 years, 10 months and 17 days old on his first fastest lap. In the fifth race, the European Grand Prix , Rosberg finished seventh again. In this race he started from last place on the grid. Rosberg, who finished in the top 10 in three other races, did not get any further points. Rosberg did not finish in half of all races. With four points, Rosberg was at the end of the season in 17th place in the drivers' world championship. He was defeated internally by Webber, who was 14th with seven points.
In 2007 Rosberg played his second Formula 1 season for Williams, which now used Toyota engines. After Webber left the racing team, Alexander Wurz became Rosberg's new team-mate. At the season opener in Australia Rosberg finished seventh again. At the subsequent Malaysian Grand Prix he retired due to a technical defect 14 laps before the end of the race. A sixth place in Spain was his only other point placement in the first half of the season. In the second half of the season, Rosberg achieved a total of five points. A fourth place in the last race in Brazil was his best result. Wurz, who was replaced by Kazuki Nakajima for the last race, achieved a podium finish with a third place, in the drivers' standings Rosberg nevertheless prevailed internally with 20 to 13 points and improved to ninth place. Rosberg was only defeated once by the roots in qualifying.
In 2008 , Rosberg and Nakajima stayed with Williams. At the season opener, the Australian Grand Prix , Rosberg achieved his first podium finish in Formula 1 with third place. Although he achieved an even better result with a second place in Singapore in the further course of the season, he was noticeable in the overall standings 13th place back, as he only came eighth in the points in three other races. With 17 to 9 points, Rosberg won the internal duel against Nakajima.
Rosberg and Nakajima also formed the Williams driver duo in the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship . As in all previous seasons, Rosberg achieved points at the season opener in Australia with sixth place. Rosberg did not achieve a podium finish in the season, but finished eleven of seventeen races in the points. In the middle of the season he managed to score points in eight consecutive grands prix. His best result - two fourth places - he achieved in Germany and Hungary . Rosberg finished the season in seventh place, which was his best overall placement with Williams. 2010
In 2010 Rosberg switched to Mercedes Grand Prix . The racing team emerged from the Brawn world championship team , and it was the first time that Mercedes had appeared as a designer since 1955 . Rosberg's teammate was Michael Schumacher , who returned to Formula 1. Rosberg finished third on the podium at the Grand Prix in Malaysia , China and Great Britain . It was the only podium finishes for Mercedes that year. At the Hungarian Grand Prix , Rosberg dropped out due to an incident in the pit lane. His team failed his pit stop and he lost his right rear wheel in the pit lane. The bike jumped through the pit lane and injured a Williams mechanic. He had to retire as a result of the incident and did not finish for the first time of the season. Rosberg only did not make it into the top 10 in four races, and three times did not finish. In the 2011 Formula 1 World Championship , Rosberg once again formed the Mercedes driver duo with Schumacher. 2012
In 2012 , Rosberg played his third season alongside Schumacher at Mercedes. In the first race in Australia , he missed points on the last lap after a contact and a consequent tire damage and finished in twelfth place. In qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix , Rosberg achieved his first pole position in Formula 1. He was the 96th driver to achieve a pole position in the Formula 1 World Championship. A day later, he scored his first Formula 1 victory in his 111th race. Rosberg is the 103rd winner of a Formula 1 Grand Prix. At the Monaco Grand Prix , he achieved another podium finish with a second place. In the internal duel against Schumacher, the qualifying and racing duels were balanced after Rosberg had always won these comparisons in previous years. In the overall standings, Rosberg nevertheless prevailed relatively clearly against Schumacher with 93 to 49 points and reached ninth place.
2013
In 2013 Rosberg stayed with Mercedes. With Hamilton he got a new teammate. At the season opener in Australia Rosberg retired with technical problems. A week later in Malaysia he had a chance of a podium finish in the closing stages. A week later in Abu Dhabi , he finished in third place. Rosberg finished the season in sixth place in the drivers' championship. With 171 to 189 points he was internally defeated by Hamilton.
2014
In 2014 , Rosberg and Hamilton again formed the Mercedes driver duo. Rosberg chose # 6 when the permanent start numbers were introduced. His father Keke Rosberg won the Formula 1 World Championship with this starting number . At the season opener in Australia , Rosberg achieved a dominant start-to-finish victory. In the following race in Malaysia he finished second behind Hamilton. In the following race, the Singapore Grand Prix , Rosberg retired due to a technical defect. With that he lost the lead in the world championship. He finished second in the next three races in Japan , Russia and the USA . At the subsequent Brazilian Grand Prix , Rosberg managed to keep Hamilton behind and win the race. Before the last race in Abu Dhabi , only Rosberg and Hamilton had title chances, although Rosberg could no longer win the title on his own. He lost the lead to Hamilton at the start and had technical problems during the race. Rosberg crossed the finish line in 14th place outside of the points. So he finally lost to Hamilton with 317 to 384 points and finished second in the world championship. Mercedes won the constructors' championship early in 2014.
2015
In 2015 , Rosberg completed his sixth Formula 1 season for Mercedes. At the season opener in Australia he finished second behind Hamilton, third in the second race in Malaysia and then second again in China . At the fourth race, the Bahrain Grand Prix , Rosberg lost second place in the final phase due to technical problems and was again third. In the following Grand Prix in Spain Rosberg achieved his first pole position and his first win of the season. In the next race, the Monaco Grand Prix , Rosberg won again. Nico Rosberg is the son of the Finnish Formula 1 world champion Keke Rosberg and the German Gesine Rosberg (née Gleitsmann-Dengel). He grew up in Wiesbaden and Ibiza , but mostly in Monaco , where he also lives. Rosberg is fluent in German , English , French , Italian and Spanish ; but no Finnish . He has both Finnish and German citizenship . Until 2003, Rosberg competed with a Finnish racing license , from 2004 he started with a German one. In his youth Rosberg played tennis successfully and represented the Monegasque national team in the sport.
He has been married to Vivian Sibold (* May 15, 1985) since 2014, with whom he has two daughters - born in 2015 and 2017.
