The 2015 Monaco Grand Prix (officially Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco 2015 ) took place on May 24th at the Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo and was the sixth race of the 2015 Formula 1 World Championship .

report

backgrounds

After the Spanish Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings by 20 points over Nico Rosberg and 31 points over Sebastian Vettel . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 70 points and Williams with 121 points .

At the Monaco Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Compared to the previous year, structural changes were made to the route. Due to renovation work at the port, the stretch between Tabac and the swimming pool was moved about 2.5 meters to the left. This reduced the total length of the route by three meters to 3.337 km. The guardrails at the apex of the exit curve of the swimming pool have been moved back to give the pilots a better view. In addition, new curbs were installed here. Large parts of the entire route have also been re-paved.

In contrast to the other racetracks on the racing calendar, there was only one DRS zone in Monaco, which was on the start-and-finish straight and remained unchanged compared to the previous year. It started 18 meters after the last bend, the measuring point was 80 meters behind the piscine .

Marcus Ericsson (five), Pastor Maldonado , Sergio Pérez (four each), Jenson Button , Romain Grosjean , Nico Hülkenberg and Roberto Merhi (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Fernando Alonso , Rosberg (twice each), Kimi Räikkönen , Hamilton, Button and Vettel (once each), six former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

As in 2013 , José Abed (MEX), Christian Calmes (MON), Tom Kristensen (DEN) and Lars Österlind (SWE) acted as race stewards .

training

The first two training sessions traditionally take place in Monaco on Thursday. In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time in 1: 18.750 minutes ahead of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo .

In the second free practice, Hamilton again set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 17.192 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Vettel. Ericsson was unable to attend the training because of a problem with his drive unit. The training had to be interrupted about 15 minutes after an accident by Merhi in the harbor chicane. It started raining during the training break. Since dry weather was predicted for the rest of the race weekend , the drivers decided not to go out on the track again after the training session was approved. Several pilots drove a few more laps only a few minutes before the end of the training session.

In the third free practice session, Vettel set the fastest time ahead of Rosberg and Hamilton with a lap time of 1: 16.134 minutes. The training had to be interrupted after Raikkonen hit the lane in Sainte Devote .

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Rosberg set the fastest lap time. The Manor pilots, the Sauber pilots and Valtteri Bottas were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Rosberg was again fastest. Alonso, who was only able to drive one slow lap due to technical problems, Felipe Massa , Hülkenberg, Button and Grosjean did not make it into the last part of the time practice.

The final section lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Hamilton drove the fastest time ahead of Rosberg and Vettel. He achieved his fifth pole position this year.

Grosjean received a starting place penalty of five places for a gear change. After qualifying, Carlos Sainz jr. disqualified because he ignored the request to have his vehicle weighed. He was allowed to start from the pit lane.

run

At the start, Hamilton stayed ahead of Rosberg and Vettel, Daniil Kwjat passed his teammate Ricciardo. On the first lap there was a collision between Alonso and Nico Hülkenberg . Hülkenberg fell back to the end of the field and had to have the front wing changed at the pits. Alonso was able to continue and received a five-second penalty. Massa also had to have a new front wing installed.

Pastor Maldonado complained about braking problems at the start of the race. Max Verstappen collided with Maldonado in the harbor chicane and damaged his front wing. However, both were initially able to continue. A few laps later, Maldonado had to park his car.

Hamilton was able to pull away at the top and was about ten seconds ahead of the pit stops. Vettel, Rosberg and Hamilton came one after the other to the pits to change tires, the order remained unchanged.

Hamilton moved further away and was in first position with a lead of around twenty seconds. On the 64th lap, when braking at Sainte Devote, Verstappen collided with Grosjean, his front suspension broke and he crashed into the lane at high speed. Verstappen was seen by the race stewards as the cause of the collision and given a starting place penalty of five places at the next race and two penalty points. Grosjean was able to continue after the accident, but his car was damaged and he fell back to twelfth place.

To recover the car, a virtual safety car phase was initially called, but a little later the safety car went on the track. Mercedes decided to pit Hamilton in to fit a fresh set of soft tires. Since Ricciardo was the only remaining driver to pit, Hamilton came back on the track just behind Rosberg and Vettel in third place.

The top three drivers at the award ceremony

The race was opened again on the 71st lap. Rosberg was able to break away from Vettel, who was attacked by Hamilton. However, Hamilton failed to get by. Ricciardo passed Raikkonen and the vehicles touched lightly. Kwjat let Ricciardo pass on the instructions of the team, who could catch up with Vettel and Hamilton, but did not get past. Red Bull then asked Ricciardo to let Kwjat overtake again on the last lap if he didn't get past Hamilton.

Rosberg won the race ahead of Vettel and Hamilton. It was Rosberg's second win of the season and his third Monaco win in a row. After Graham Hill (1963–1965), Alain Prost (1984–1986) and Ayrton Senna (1989–1993), he was the fourth driver to do this. The top 10 were completed by Kwjat, Ricciardo, Räikkönen, Sergio Pérez , Button, Felipe Nasr and Carlos Sainz jr. It was the first points for Button and McLaren-Honda of the season.

In the drivers' standings, Rosberg was able to reduce the gap to Hamilton, Vettel stayed in third place. The first three positions in the constructors' championship remained unchanged, and Mercedes was able to further extend its lead over Ferrari.
