report

backgrounds

After the Japanese Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings 48 points ahead of Nico Rosberg and 59 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led with 169 points ahead of Ferrari and with 298 points ahead of Williams .

At the Russian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Compared to the previous year, the route has only been changed slightly. The additional curbs at the vertices of curve 2 and curve 13 behind the actual curbs have been flattened to a height of eight centimeters. An additional curb was installed at the exit of curve 2 , which protrudes over the existing curb by five centimeters. In the run-out zone of the curve, bollards were installed and lines painted so that vehicles can safely drive back at this point after leaving the route. In addition, openings were created in the road boundaries in Turn 4 and Turn 5 in order to be able to recover vehicles from the route more quickly. The TecPro barriers installed in turn 8 were lengthened, and the wall on the right at the entrance to the pit lane was replaced by a guardrail .

The route had two DRS zones. The first zone began at the apex of curve 1 , the measuring point was 138 meters before the curve. The second measuring point was 72 meters before curve 10 , immediately afterwards on the back straight, 230 meters behind the curve the second DRS zone began.

Honda provided the McLaren team with the final stage of their engine for the first time for Fernando Alonso's vehicle during free practice at the Russian Grand Prix. Honda used the last of the tokens available for 2015 for this purpose . However, it was not planned to race the new engine until the US Grand Prix .

Pastor Maldonado (six), Max Verstappen (five), Marcus Ericsson , Romain Grosjean , Nico Hülkenberg , Sergio Pérez (four each), Vettel (three), Jenson Button , Hamilton and Daniil Kwjat (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

Alonso contested a Grand Prix weekend for the 250th time. Since he, like all other drivers with vehicles with Michelin tires, did not start at the 2005 US Grand Prix, it was his 249th Grand Prix.

With Hamilton (once) a former winner competed at this Grand Prix.

Derek Daly (GBR), Paul Gutjahr (CHE), Wassili Skryl (RUS) and Vincenzo Spano (VEN) acted as race commissioners .

training

In the first free practice session, Hülkenberg set the fastest time in 1: 44.355 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Vettel. The training could only start 30 minutes late because a diesel film was on the racetrack that had to be removed with an oil binding agent . The track offered little grip, so there were a lot of driving errors and spinning.

It started raining shortly before the second free practice session. As dry weather was forecast for the rest of the weekend, most drivers either did not drive at all or only a few installation laps. Felipe Massa set the fastest lap in 2: 00.458 minutes, ahead of Vettel and Valtteri Bottas . Only eight drivers set a lap time, six drivers did not drive at all.

In the third free practice, Rosberg set the fastest time in 1: 38.561 minutes ahead of Bottas and Hamilton. After a serious accident by Carlos Sainz jr. canceled. Sainz lost control of his car when braking into turn 13 and hit the lane on the inside of the curve. The front left suspension broke and Sainz hit the TecPro barrier at turn 14 at high speed . It took almost twenty minutes until the slightly injured Sainz could be rescued from the badly damaged vehicle.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Rosberg was the fastest. Sainz did not take part in qualifying after his accident in free practice and did not qualify for the race. The Manor pilots, Ericsson and Alonso were eliminated.

The second qualifying segment (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. Rosberg was again fastest. Massa, Maldonado, Button, Felipe Nasr and Kwjat were eliminated.

The last section lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were assigned. With a time of 1: 37.113 minutes, Rosberg secured pole position from Hamilton and Bottas. It was Rosberg's third pole position of the season and the 14th for a Mercedes driver. With his 18th pole position in total, Rosberg and René Arnoux now had most of the first places on the grid for those drivers who did not win a world championship title.

Alonso was moved 35 starting positions back because of the use of the tenth internal combustion engine, the ninth turbocharger, the ninth MGU-H and the seventh control electronics. Merhi has been moved 20 positions back to use the fifth internal combustion engine, fifth turbocharger, and fifth MGU-H. Sainz also received a starting place penalty of 20 places for using the seventh internal combustion engine, the sixth turbocharger and replacing the gearbox early.

run

Rosberg kept the lead over Hamilton at the start. Raikkonen started well and passed Vettel. In turn two , Bottas attacked Hamilton on the outside, but lost a lot of momentum as a result of this attack, so that Raikkonen also passed him after the curve. Hulkenberg, driving immediately behind Raikkonen and Vettel, turned in turn two and touched Verstappen, who then also turned. Ericsson couldn't avoid it and collided with Hulkenberg. The race was over for both of them, Verstappen had to pit with a punctured tire and a damaged front wing. The safety car came out to rescue the vehicles .

In the fourth lap the race was released again. Bottas passed Raikkonen immediately after the restart. One lap later, the lead Rosberg reported to his team over the radio that he had a problem with the accelerator. The position of the pedal changed due to a defective sealing ring, so that Rosberg could not take his foot off the accelerator without bumping his knee on the steering wheel. On lap seven, Rosberg drove straight ahead in turn two and Hamilton took the lead, shortly afterwards Bottas also passed him. Rosberg pitted at the end of the lap and gave up the race for safety reasons. Hamilton was leading at this point in front of Bottas, Raikkonen, Vettel, Pérez, Kwjat, Daniel Ricciardo , Nasr, Massa and Button.

On lap twelve Grosjean lost control of his car and hit the lane. There was another safety car phase to recover the vehicle and the debris. Pérez, Ricciardo, Alonso, Sainz and Button took the opportunity to change tires.

The race was released again on the 17th lap. Vettel attacked Raikkonen, who initially fended off the attack, but then gave in. Hamilton was able to pull away at the top and led in front of Bottas, Vettel, Räikkönen, Kwjat, Nasr, Massa, Perez, Maldonado and Ricciardo. Sainz received a five-second penalty for crossing the white line at the pit entrance. Vettel shortened the gap to Bottas, who reported tire problems to the pits via radio. On lap 27, Bottas pitted to change tires and fell back to eleventh place.

Vettel changed tires on lap 30 and stayed well ahead of Bottas. One lap later, Raikkonen, who came back on the track just before Bottas, also changed. Bottas, however, had more momentum and passed Raikkonen. One lap later, Hamilton also changed tires, but retained the lead. Behind him were Kwjat, who had not yet been to the pits to change tires, and Pérez, who had already changed in the second safety car phase.

Vettel passed Pérez one lap later. Since Kwjat went to change tires, Vettel took second place. On lap 36, Raikkonen passed Bottas, who was able to counter immediately. After the pit stops, Hamilton was ahead of Vettel, Peréz, Ricciardo, Bottas, Räikkönen, Sainz, Kwjat, Massa and Button. Nasr, who was the last driver to change tires, passed Button shortly afterwards. Maldonado also overtook Button afterwards. Massa passed Kwjat and was now eighth.

Vettel drove the fastest lap times in the field and shortened the gap to Hamilton. Bottas and Raikkonen caught up with Ricciardo and passed him in quick succession. Sainz suffered a brake defect, turned and hit the track barrier backwards. He damaged his rear wing, but initially drove on. After losing part of the wing on the route, he parked his vehicle on the edge of the road.

Shortly afterwards, Ricciardo reported a problem with the suspension of his car to the pit, which instructed him to park the vehicle at the edge of the track. Hamilton reported a problem with the rear spoiler and was instructed not to use the DRS. Bottas and Räikkönen shortened the gap to Pérez and were immediately behind him three laps before the end of the race. They passed him on the penultimate lap.

Räikkönen attacked Bottas on the last lap and there was a collision. Bottas was eliminated, Raikkonen managed to drive the damaged vehicle to the finish line, Pérez and Massa were ahead of him. The race stewards saw Raikkonen as the cause of the collision, he subsequently received a 10-second stop-and-go penalty, which was converted into a 30-second time penalty, and thus dropped from fifth to eighth. In addition, he received three penalty points. Alonso, who crossed the finish line in tenth place, received a five-second penalty for repeatedly shortening the curve in turn 16 and dropped back to eleventh place.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Vettel and Pérez. It was the ninth win of the season for Hamilton, with 42 wins he drew level with Vettel. For Mercedes it was the twelfth win of the season. Pérez achieved his first podium since the 2014 Bahrain Grand Prix . The top 10 were completed by Massa, Kwjat, Nasr, Maldonado, Räikkönen, Button and Verstappen.

Hamilton retained the lead in the drivers' championship, Vettel was second in front of Rosberg. After the race stewards 'decision to give Raikkonen a time penalty retrospectively, Mercedes was already the winner of the constructors' world championship. It is the second world title after 2014 . Ferrari and Williams stayed in second and third place.
