The Grand Prix of Russia 2019 (official Formula 1 VTB Russian Grand Prix in 2019 ) took place on 29 September at the Sochi Autodrome in Sochi place and was the sixteenth race of the Formula 1 World Championship in 2019 .

After the Singapore Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with 65 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas and 96 points each ahead of Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led with 133 points ahead of Ferrari and with 238 points ahead of Red Bull Racing .
At the Russian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (white, compound C2 ), P Zero Medium (yellow, C3 ) and P Zero Soft (red, C4 ), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full for wet conditions -Wets (blue) available.
Sebastian Vettel (nine), Lance Stroll (seven), Daniel Ricciardo , Verstappen (five each), Antonio Giovinazzi (four), Kevin Magnussen , Romain Grosjean (three each), Hamilton, Daniil Kwjat , Carlos Sainz jr. (two each), Alexander Albon , Pierre Gasly , Sergio Pérez and George Russell (one each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.
With Hamilton (three times) and Bottas (once) two former winners competed at this Grand Prix.

In the first free practice Charles Leclerc achieved the fastest lap time in 1: 34.462 minutes ahead of Verstappen and Vettel.
In the second free practice session, Verstappen was fastest in 1: 33.162 minutes ahead of Leclerc and Bottas.
In the third free practice, Leclerc set the fastest time in 1: 32.733 minutes ahead of Vettel and Hamilton.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Vettel was fastest. Kwjat did not take part in qualifying due to an engine failure in the third free practice and did not qualify for the Grand Prix. The segment was interrupted by Albon after an accident. Besides him, the Williams drivers and Kimi Räikkönen were eliminated.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest drivers qualified for the third part of the qualifying and had to start the race with the tires used here, all other drivers had a free choice of tires for the start of the race. The Mercedes drivers set their fastest lap times on the medium mixture, all the other drivers drove on soft . Leclerc was the fastest. The Racing Point drivers, Magnussen, Giovinazzi and Gasly retired.
The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Leclerc set the best time with a lap time of 1: 31.628 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. It was Leclerc's sixth pole position in the Formula 1 World Championship, the fourth in a row.
Albon, Gasly and Verstappen were moved five starting positions down this season due to the use of the fifth combustion engine. Kubica was moved to the bottom of the field this season because of the use of the fourth specimen of the internal combustion engine, turbocharger and MGU-H. Although he did not qualify, Kvyat was allowed to race because he was fast enough in free practice. He was also moved to the bottom of the field because of the use of the sixth specimen of the combustion engine, turbocharger, MGU-H and the fifth specimen of the MGU-K this season.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Bottas and Leclerc. It was the 82nd victory for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship. The remaining points were placed by Verstappen, Albon, Sainz, Pérez, Lando Norris , Magnussen and Nico Hülkenberg . Since Hamilton had achieved the fastest race lap, he received an additional point.
In the drivers' championship, Hamilton extended its lead over Bottas, Leclerc remained third. The first three places in the constructors' championship remained unchanged.
