Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Verstappen was fastest. The two Williams drivers, Daniil Kwjat and both Racing Point drivers retired.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Bottas, Hamilton and Verstappen qualified on the medium mix, all other drivers on the soft mix. Leclerc was the fastest. Carlos Sainz Jr. who have favourited Renault drivers, Alexander Albon and Romain Grosjean were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Vettel was unable to participate in this segment due to a technical problem with his vehicle and had no time. Leclerc set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 03.003 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Verstappen. It was Leclerc's second pole position in the Formula 1 World Championship after the 2019 Bahrain Grand Prix and the fastest lap time ever achieved on this circuit.

Hamilton and George Russell were moved three positions back because they had obstructed other drivers in qualifying. Hulkenberg was moved five positions back because he used the fourth combustion engine this season, a maximum of three were allowed. Magnussen was also moved five positions back because the gearbox on his car was changed prematurely. Albon and Sainz were moved back to the bottom of the field as they had used more drive unit components than allowed this season.

run

Leclerc stayed in the lead at the start, behind which Verstappen lost several places and fell back to seventh place. Lando Norris briefly passed Hamilton, but lost the position again during the first lap. At the end of the first lap, Leclerc was leading in front of Bottas, Hamilton, Räikkönen, Norris, Vettel, Verstappen, Gasly, Antonio Giovinazzi and Sergio Pérez .

Vettel and Verstappen passed Norris and Raikkonen one after the other. Leclerc took the lead and after ten laps led by around three seconds over Bottas, who had an almost identical lead over Hamilton. Magnussen received a drive-through penalty for not correctly standing in his starting position at the start.

Norris reduced the gap to Raikkonen and passed on lap 14. Gasly also caught up with Raikkonen, but couldn't get past. At the end of lap 21 Bottas pitted to change tires and switched to Hard . Vettel reacted to this and also pitted, but there were no fresh tires ready for him. He had to wait until the mechanics had fetched the tires and so fell behind Raikkonen and Gasly.

One lap later, Leclerc switched to Hard and came back on the track in third place. Raikkonen also switched to Hard another lap later . Gasly and Norris switched simultaneously on lap 25, Norris to medium , Gasly to hard . The order between the two remained unchanged. Hamilton was leading before Verstappen, both of whom had not yet pitted. Behind were Leclerc, Bottas, Vettel, Pérez, Sainz, Daniel Ricciardo , Norris and Albon.

Pérez changed his tires on lap 29 and fell back to 13th place. One lap later, Hamilton also moved to Hard while in the lead , and he also got a new front wing. He fell back to fifth behind Vettel. Another lap later, Verstappen stopped, he stayed ahead of Hamilton, although he had previously been six seconds behind.

Gasly passed Raikkonen on lap 32 and was now in ninth place. Norris and Gasly ran into Ricciardo. Norris overtook him on lap 41, Gasly also passed three laps later. Sainz switched to medium on lap 41 . Verstappen drove the fastest lap of the race to date and caught up with Vettel.

On lap 46 Ricciardo switched to Soft . Verstappen put Vettel under pressure, but he defended himself several times. On lap 50, Verstappen finally overtook Vettel and was now third. Vettel then pitted and switched to soft , falling behind Hamilton to fifth place.

Verstappen caught up with Bottas in the following laps. However, he reported to his team over the radio that he was losing performance. Nevertheless, he passed Bottas on lap 56. He then again drove the fastest lap of the race up to that point, shortening the gap to Leclerc. On lap 66 he was within striking distance for the first time, but Leclerc defended the lead. Verstappen attacked again one lap later, Leclerc defended himself again. He passed on lap 69, but the vehicles touched and Verstappen pushed Leclerc off the track. Vettel passed Hamilton on lap 70.

Verstappen won the race ahead of Leclerc and Bottas. It was Verstappen's first win since the 2018 Mexican Grand Prix . It was also the first win for a Honda-powered vehicle since the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix when Jenson Button won on the Honda factory team. Leclerc achieved his best result in the Formula 1 World Championship to date. The remaining points were placed by Vettel, Hamilton, Norris, Gasly, Sainz, Raikkonen and Giovinazzi. Since Verstappen had also achieved the fastest race lap, he received a special point.

In the overall standings, Hamilton remained ahead of Bottas, while Verstappen was now third. The first three places in the constructors' championship remained unchanged.
