With the exception of the financially troubled Fittipaldi team, which did not have a sufficient number of engines available, the field of participants for the eleventh World Championship round of the season remained unchanged compared to the German Grand Prix .
At the start, Villeneuve overtook the two Renaults and took the lead in front of them and his team-mate Didier Pironi, who also started well from eighth . However, due to a driving mistake from Villeneuves, which threw him back to sixth place, the two Renault drivers got back to their starting positions during the second lap and were able to break away from the rest of the field. Among other things, this was helped by the fact that Pironi, who was now third in his non-competitive car, clearly seemed to hold back the other pursuers. When Laffite was the first to find the way past his compatriot in the ninth lap, Prost and Arnoux had already gained a lead of around 20 seconds.
In the course of the further laps, Laffite was able to gradually reduce the lead of the leaders, followed by Piquet and the two Williams drivers Jones and Reutemann, who had also overtaken Pironi in the meantime. On the 39th lap he overtook Arnoux and took the lead, as Prost had previously retired due to a suspension damage.
Behind Laffite, Arnoux and Piquet, Jones and Reutemann took fifth and sixth. John Watson received the last championship point of the day in sixth place.
