Reports
background
An essentially identical starting field as in the previous German Grand Prix was also reported for the Austrian Grand Prix. Only the Connew team, which appeared for the first time at the British Grand Prix , was also at the start again. In addition, Ferrari did not use a third car this time and at BRM , Peter Gethin was used instead of Reine Wisell .
As was common at the time, the first corner of the Österreichring was driven without a chicane, which resulted in high average speeds.
training
Seven different vehicles qualified for the first eight starting positions. The pole position was achieved by Emerson Fittipaldi , who is the leader in the world championship, on a Lotus . Alongside him, Ferrari driver Clay Regazzoni qualified for the front row. This was followed by Jackie Stewart on Tyrrell and Peter Revson at McLaren in series two to Brabham -Pilot Carlos Reutemann , Matra -Werksfahrer Chris Amon , the second McLaren works driver Denny Hulme and Tim taverns on Surtees .
Henri Pescarolo , who already the team's first own car in the UK GP Frank Williams Racing Cars had destroyed and due to return as a customer before March had to attend, now damaged in training so strong that he did not participate this in the race could.
François Migault qualified for last place on the grid. The first and only Grand Prix start of a Connew racing car followed.
run
Despite his third place on the grid, Stewart managed to take the lead immediately. Behind him were Regazzoni and Fittipaldi, who had started the race from the front row, and Hulme, who had made a good start from seventh place.
After a few minutes, Regazzoni had problems with the fuel supply and was slowing down as a result. However, he managed to keep Fittipaldi behind him until the fourth lap. Stewart benefited from this situation by being able to pull away easily. On lap 13 Regazzoni finally had to give up the race completely.
Fittipaldi closed the gap to Stewart within a few laps and was able to overtake him on lap 24. Three laps later, Hulme also passed Stewart, who fell further back in the following laps. Peterson temporarily took third place before he had to give up due to problems with the fuel supply and let Revson take the podium.
The duel for the top between Fittipaldi and Hulme lasted until the end of the race, with Fittipaldi always just ahead of the game. With his fourth win of the season and now 25 points ahead of Hulme and Stewart, who were tied for second place in the World Championship, with only three races left, Fittipaldi came very close to winning the title.
Registration list
