Reports
background
With Tyrrell and Ferrari , two of the best teams of the previous year started the new season with unchanged regular drivers.
At Lotus , where the new main sponsor John Player was now in the black and gold livery , Dave Walker was signed as the second regular driver alongside Emerson Fittipaldi , while Reine Wisell switched to BRM , where he did most of the races of the season alongside Howden Ganley and Peter Gethin as well as various other drivers should contest. The original plan there was to use up to six vehicles per race. BRM received financial support for this project from Marlboro and therefore ceded the former main sponsor Yardley to McLaren , where Peter Revson was now under contract alongside Denis Hulme .
Team Brabham was sold to Bernie Ecclestone by Ron Tauranac . Graham Hill was the team faithful and received the Formula 1 newcomer Carlos Reutemann as new teammates since Tim taverns at Surtees , was under contract to team founder John Surtees to replace that only occasionally wanted to participate in the races in person.
At March , Niki Lauda became the second regular driver alongside Ronnie Peterson . Matra permanently reduced his Formula 1 involvement to just one vehicle that was still driven by Chris Amon .
training
The new season started with a sensation when debutant Carlos Reutemann secured pole position in front of Jackie Stewart in his home race . The two McLaren qualified for the second row of the grid ahead of Fittipaldi in the Lotus 72 and Clay Regazzoni in the Ferrari 312B2 .
run
Chris Amon had a gearbox damage on the warm-up lap and was therefore unable to start.
Stewart accelerated the pole-setter Reutemann and thereby took over the lead, which he did not give up until the finish. Behind Reutemann, Fittipaldi had fought his way through to third with a good start past Revson and Hulme.
Within the following laps, Reutemann was first overtaken by Fittipaldi and shortly afterwards by Hulme. Then the order of the leaders remained constant over several laps until Fittipaldi had transmission problems from lap 35 and fell behind Hulme. A little later, Reutemann had to head for the pit to have new tires fitted.
Since both third-placed Fittipaldi and fourth-placed François Cevert were unable to finish the race, Jacky Ickx achieved a podium finish.
