John Player (* 1839 ; † 1884 ) was a British entrepreneur. His company John Player & Sons (German: John Player & Sons ), which specialized in tobacco and cigarette production , became known above all . Today the company is part of the Imperial Brands .

Companies

The John Player Company was founded in Nottingham in 1877 through the purchase of William Wright's tobacco business with 150 employees. After a short time it grew into an economically flourishing company. From 1893, John Player's sons, John Dane and William Goodacre Player, took over management.

In 1901, Players merged with other companies such as WD & HO Wills to form the Imperial Tobacco Group in order to better withstand competitive pressure from the USA. A new factory, the Horizon Factory, was opened in the late 1970s, thanks in part to better infrastructure . The old factories in Radford (especially the No. 1 factory) were gradually closed and the demolition of No. 3 factory, with its distinctive John Player & Sons clock and roof molding , took place in the late 1980s.

John Player sponsored the John Player Portrait Award of the National Portrait Gallery . In 1989 BP took over . The award is now known as the BP Portrait Prize .

The mark

John Player's brands are particularly known among motorsport fans due to the long support of the former Lotus Formula 1 team. Initially, the Gold Leaf brand was advertised ("Gold Leaf Lotus Cosworth") . The best known are the John Player Special products. The black paint was from 1972 to 1986 and from 1988 to 1991 the JPS Norton with a rotary engine.

With a greatly reduced workforce, Player is still in business, but no more than one of the “three big” employers in Nottingham. Today, John Player Special and John Player King Size are made by Imperial Tobacco ( Reemtsma ), while John Player Gold Leaf is made by British American Tobacco (in some countries).
