The 1972 Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 14th and was the fourth race of the 1972 World Automobile Championship .
Reports
background
For the fourth round of the World Championship in Monaco there was a field of drivers similar to that in Spain two weeks earlier . Exceptions were the two Americans Mario Andretti and Peter Revson , who were both involved in preliminary tests for the Indianapolis 500 . While Andretti was absent without replacement, Revson was represented at McLaren by Brian Redman . In addition, Wilson Fittipaldi continued to represent the injured Carlos Reutemann at Brabham .
Since small modifications to the route had been made, the organizer agreed that 25 cars could take part in the race. In the past few years, due to the limited space available, the starting field was always limited to 16 and in the previous year 18 cars for safety reasons .
Tyrrell first used the new Type 004 in the race. Jackie Stewart drove the car, while his teammate François Cevert continued to drive the tried and tested 002 .
training
In Friday practice, which took place under dry conditions, Emerson Fittipaldi secured the first pole position of his Formula 1 career with a lap time of 1: 21.4. Since it was raining on Saturday, no driver could beat this time. Behind the Brazilians, the two qualified Ferrari pilots Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni before Jean-Pierre Beltoise in one of the factory BRM also each scored their best times on Friday.
run
The rain that had already started on Saturday continued on Sunday. Beltoise got off to a good start from the second row, which immediately brought him to the top, which he never gave up until the end of the race. Regazzoni, who had also started from the second row, followed him in second, while Fittipaldi and Ickx, who had started from the front row, found themselves in third and fourth ahead of Stewart. Due to the generally poor visibility caused by the spray blown up by the vehicles in front , Beltoise had a decisive advantage at the front, which he used to extend his lead. This was made easier for him by the fact that Regazzoni had a slip in the fifth lap in which he forced Fittipaldi and Ickx into the emergency exit of the port chicane. All three were able to continue the race, but lost a few seconds.
Stewart was third for a long time before turning. He was able to continue the race but was overtaken by Regazzoni. A short time later, however, he retired because of a lathe operator. Stewart held on to the third place he had won back for a few laps while his engine misfired. Fittipaldi finally overtook him shortly before the end and thus secured the podium.
18 racing cars crossed the finish line, with François Cevert not being classified because he was too far behind. What was unusual at the time was the fact that Reine Wisell was the only driver who had to give up the race due to a technical defect. The other six drivers who did not reach the finish line were all eliminated due to driving errors on the wet track.
Jean-Pierre Beltoise achieved his first and only Grand Prix victory on the Monaco circuit, which was considered to be extremely demanding in terms of driving, in a BRM P160 B, which at the time was not particularly competitive under normal conditions . His compatriot Olivier Panis achieved the same position in 1996 comparable success.
The triumph turned out to be the last win for BRM. Although the team competed in the 1972 Grand Prix with up to five works cars due to generous support from the sponsors, no further victory was achieved. There was no success in the following years either, before the team officially left at the end of 1975 and the last customer vehicles also disappeared in 1977 .
