The 1978 Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 7th and was the fifth race of the 1978 World Automobile Championship .

Reports

background

Formula 1 kicked off the European season with the fifth round of the World Championship. The field was almost unchanged compared to the Long Beach Grand Prix a month earlier. One of the few exceptions was the Formula 1 comeback of Jacky Ickx after a break of about a year instead of Lamberto Leoni at Ensign . In addition, the Martini team competed again.

The Surtees team used a copy of the new TS20 car for the first time . The vehicle was driven by Vittorio Brambilla .

training

Due to a starter limitation to 20 vehicles, a pre-qualification was necessary again in view of the entry list, which included 30 potential participants, at the end of which the six slowest drivers were eliminated. Four other non-participants were identified during regular training.

Carlos Reutemann secured pole position for the second time in a row, closely followed by the two Brabham drivers John Watson and Niki Lauda and Mario Andretti in a Lotus . Patrick Depailler and James Hunt formed the third row on the grid .

run

The best starts went to Watson, who took the lead, and Depailler, who finished second. Reutemann dueled Lauda for third place ahead of Hunt in fifth. During the first round there was a contact between the two duelists. Hunt had to evade and touched the wall. While Lauda was able to continue the race in third place in front of Mario Andretti, Jody Scheckter and Alan Jones , Reutemann and Hunt had to head to the pit to have repairs carried out.

On the 38th lap, Watson had to surrender the lead to Depailler after a driving error. Lauda also passed Watson, but had to go to the pits a short time later due to a puncture.

Patrick Depailler won a Grand Prix for the first time and thus took the lead in the World Cup. By the end of the race, Niki Lauda made it back to second place ahead of Jody Scheckter, John Watson, Didier Pironi and Riccardo Patrese .
