After only the two top Italian teams Ferrari and Maserati took part in the first race of the season, the 1957 Argentine Grand Prix , various British teams participated in the Monaco Grand Prix with BRM , Vanwall , Connaught and Cooper Car Company . The field of drivers increased from 14 drivers at the season opener to 21 drivers who were registered for the Monaco Grand Prix.

In the run-up to the Grand Prix, Ferrari was hit by several tragic events. Eugenio Castellotti and Alfonso de Portago died in accidents and Cesare Perdisa ended his career as a result. For the fatally injured Ferrari driver, team owner Enzo Ferrari was heavily criticized and legal proceedings followed that dealt with these events. Peter Collins and Mike Hawthorn stayed in the team, Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips rose from substitute driver to regular driver and was given his own car. In addition, Maurice Trintignant was brought back into the team. In the months between the first and second races of the season, five non-World Championship races took place. Collins won two of these races for Ferrari, the Syracuse Grand Prix and the Napoli Grand Prix. At the Pau Grand Prix, Jean Behra was successful in the Maserati, the Glover Trophy in Goodwood was won by Stuart Lewis-Evans in the Connaught and Fangio won another Grand Prix in Argentina, which took place after the official Argentine Grand Prix. Ferrari still used the previous year's Ferrari D50 and Ferrari D50A for Collins and Hawthorn, but had already tested the new Ferrari 801 . The car received an improved engine and was based more on the design of the Ferrari 555 Supersqualo . The front was changed accordingly to the shape of the 1955 car, the side pods of the Ferrari D50 disappeared as a distinguishing feature. Maserati continued to rely on its Maserati 250F , which was only slightly modified compared to the previous year , only with Juan Manuel Fangio they also experimented with a new engine. After the move from Stirling Moss to Vanwall, Maserati provided Giorgio Scarlatti , Carlos Menditéguy , Harry Schell and Hans Herrmann cars for this Grand Prix . Herrmann returned to Formula 1 after a two-year break, but only competed sporadically in the following years.

After several grands prix breaks, BRM also returned to Formula 1 and competed with the BRM P25 for Ron Flockhart and Roy Salvadori . Connaught fielded two Connaught Type B cars for Stuart Lewis-Evans and Ivor Bueb , both drivers drove their first race in Formula 1. Vanwall also competed for the first time in the 1957 Automobile World Championship with the driver pairing Moss and Tony Brooks . The car from the previous year was further developed and the new Vanwall VW57 was used for the entire season .

Cooper used the newly developed Cooper T43 for the first time. The car was the only one in the field with a mid-engine and one year later it brought the first victory of such a car in Formula 1 history and revolutionized Formula 1 in 1959 and 1960. Climax units were used as the engine, primarily the most successful engines became in the 1960s. In the first race of this important car, the later three-time world champion Jack Brabham and Les Leston started.

Several drivers with private Maserati 250Fs were registered for the Monaco Grand Prix . The Scuderia Centro Sud sat two of Maserati for André Simon and Masten Gregory a. This Grand Prix was the Formula 1 debut for the American Gregory. In addition, Horace Gould and Luigi Piotti competed with their own teams and private cars.

In the drivers' championship, Fangio was ahead of Behra and Menditeguy, with Fangio, Trintignant and Moss, the three former winners of the race competed, Maserati and Ferrari were each successful once in the two previous years.

training

The training for the 1957 Monaco Grand Prix was determined by the top drivers of the respective top teams. Fangio won this duel between himself, Collins and Moss and reached pole position in a time of 1: 42.7. He was half a second faster than the runner-up Ferrari driver Collins. For Maserati it was the second pole position in the second race of the Formula 1 season in 1957. Compared to the first race of the season, Ferrari significantly reduced the gap to Maserati with the new Ferrari 801. Vanwall's VW57 also impressed in the first practice session, Moss reached the front row in third place, team-mate Brooks qualified in fourth place, alongside Ferrari driver Hawthorn, who was still driving the previous year's car.

Menditeguy qualified for the third row ahead of Schell and Graf Berghe von Trips, who was taking part in a training session for the first time. In his two previous races, he only took over a teammate's car in one race. The top 10 was completed by debutant Gregory, the best position for a driver with private cars.

For safety reasons, only 16 cars were allowed to take part in the race, so five drivers did not qualify. BRM driver Salvadori did not qualify for the race, while his teammate Flockhart achieved eleventh place on the grid. At Connaught, both drivers achieved qualification in their first Formula 1 race, at Cooper only Brabham made it to 15th position. The other drivers whose time was insufficient to take part in the races were the Maserati factory drivers Herrmann, Simon and Piotti with private Maserati, as well as Leston in the Cooper.

run

Moss had the best start from the front row and already after the first corner he overtook Collins and Fangio and led the race in the Vanwall. On lap two, Collins overtook Fangio and was directly behind Moss, but that was his undoing. Moss lost control of his car on lap four after exiting the tunnel and collided with the boundary, which then spread out along the route. The following Collins tried to avoid the wreckage of Moss' car and the destroyed track barriers and collided with the wall on the other side of the track. Fangio and Brooks reached the scene of the accident and braked hard to drive slowly through the chicane. Hawthorn saw the slow vehicles and the scene of the accident too late and drove Brooks into the stern. Brooks Vanwall was damaged in this subsequent crash, but was able to continue the race. For Hawthorn, who lost a wheel, as well as Moss and Collins, however, the race ended prematurely, and all three top drivers were eliminated in this accident. Fangio then took the lead over the race in front of Brooks.

After the track had been cleaned and allowed to drive at full speed again, Brooks was five seconds behind Fangio and was unable to effectively reduce this lead with his damaged car. At this point in the race, Graf Berghe von Trips was in third position and dueled with the two Maserati drivers Menditeguy and Schell. He emerged victorious from that duel after Menditeguy had to make an early tire change after going too hard over a curb. Schell, who moved up one position to fourth, dropped out on lap 22 with suspension damage.

In the meantime, Brabham worked his way up several positions with his Cooper and moved up to fourth place due to Schell's failure. The prospect of a first point placement for the team was given, because Trintignant, who was behind Brabham, fell further behind with technical problems.

In the following laps, Fangio and Brooks drove a safe race in the lead, while Menditeguy made up several positions behind them. He overtook Trintignant and Brabham and inherited third place after Hawthorn took over the car from Count Berghe von Trips. Hawthorn then gave the car back after only three laps.

On lap 46 Bueb retired with a defective fuel tank, on lap 50 Menditeguy spun off the track and on lap 59 Flockhart suffered engine damage. The race was over for BRM and Graf Berghe von Trips was back on course for the podium in third place. Harry Schell, who had meanwhile taken over the car from Scarlatti, retired on lap 64 with an oil leak, which meant that only seven drivers were still in the race. With ten laps to go, Graf Berghe von Trips' Ferrari suffered an engine failure which caused it to collide with a wall. However, he was still counted for the classification. Brabham inherited third place, but Cooper's first podium was prevented by a defective fuel pump on his car. He stopped a few meters from the finish line and pushed his car the rest of the way to the finish. Through this action, which was still compliant in 1957, Brabham reached position six. This was not a point placement, but the first finish of a Cooper.

Fangio drove a safe and dominant victory at the 1957 Monaco Grand Prix. It was the third Maserati victory in a row and Fangio also won the second race of the Formula 1 season in 1957 after the season opener. This was the last victory at the Monaco Grand Prix for both Fangio and Maserati. With a gap of 25 seconds on Fangio, Brooks crossed the finish line in second place in the damaged Vanwall. For him and his team, it was the first podium finish in Formula 1. Gregory also achieved the same for Scuderia Centro Sud. For the team it was the best single result in their history, for Gregory the first podium finish in his debut race. In addition, Gregory was the first driver from the USA to make it onto the podium outside the Indianapolis 500 . Another debutant, Lewis-Evans finished fourth in the Connaught, Trintignant in the Ferrari completed the points. In the drivers' championship, Fangio extended his lead to eleven points because Jean Behra did not take part in the Grand Prix, Brooks was in second place with Behra after two out of eight races with six points each. In fourth and fifth place were Menditeguy and Gregory with four points each.
